Job Description:
- Responsible for the safety of himself/herself and others. Drives safety performance throughout the team and the mill by demonstrating safe practices, listening to suggestions, coaching team on unsafe acts/practices and implementing new, safe ways to operate.
- Plans and directs activities related to operation of assigned paper machine(s) to meet production schedules at specified quality and cost levels.
- Assures scheduling of personnel for crewing paper machines with properly trained and qualified personnel on each shift, particularly during vacation periods.
- Supervises training for Boss Machine Tenders and each machine crew to insure maximum production and quality.
- Plans and schedules maintenance work on paper machines to minimize unscheduled downtime. (This involves keeping records of roll and clothing changes, recommending changes and coordinating shutdowns.)
- Studies operations and makes recommendations for improvements in practices and procedures to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, or cost control.
- Assists Boss Machine Tenders in solving production and quality problems.
- Administers housekeeping programs in Paper Machine Department.
- Maintains discipline in accordance with Company rules and regulations.
- Investigates suggestions as required.
- Assumes responsibility for total mill operations on weekends as assigned. Provides holiday coverage for Paper Division as assigned.
- Assumes responsibility for Paper Division operations in absence of Paper Division Superintendent as assigned.
- Assumes responsibility for other Assistant Paper Mill Superintendents in their absence as assigned.
- Promotes good management-employee relations within Paper Machine Department.
- Serves as standing member on Uncoated Yield Committee.
- Attends 3:00 p.m. Production Meeting.
- Assists in both annual and five-year capital budget planning.
- Serves on committees and task forces as assigned.
- Assists in planning of Engineered Products, Sales and Manufacturing Service trials in an effort to minimize complications inherent in trial runs.
- Works annual maintenance shutdown to provide manufacturing input and assistance to Engineering and Maintenance Departments.
- Significant Position Dimensions
Responsible for annual operating budget of $6.0MM (2002), including machine clothing budget of $1.7MM (2002).
Knowledge of papermaking process for headbox approach systems through forming, pressing, drying and calendering on assigned machine(s). Understands the interaction between all facets of the papermaking process with paper properties.
Overall responsibility for the operations of the five paper machines which produce 35% of the Spring Grove Division's annual uncoated paper tonnage.

Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of E-Mail; Word processing software; Spreadsheet software; Manufacturing software and Database software.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manages 4 subordinate supervisors who supervise bargaining unit employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
