About the Department

Specialized work involving the safety of school children in their endeavor to cross busy roadways during school hours at peak traffic times. School Crossing Guards (SCG) are part-time employees that only report to work on days in accordance with the School Board of Alachua County School Year Calendar. During the summer the SCG might be asked to work summer school if their assigned school participates in a summer school program.

Employees assigned to this classification report to the SCG & FST Supervisor.  Performance is evaluated through conferences, observation, and appropriate employee performance appraisals.

Position Duties

  • Cross children only when the traffic is clear by taking advantage of gaps in the flow of traffic or creating gaps in traffic in order to safely cross children when conditions are extremely congested
  • Monitor the flow of traffic and report all unsafe conditions to their supervisors

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

High School / GEDPreferred
Major(s):

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Must attend and successfully complete classroom training and instruction in the field after hire as well as the morning and afternoon observation at the guard’s primary post on their first day of assignment. Training includes but not limited to:
  • Detailed explanation of agency rules and regulations pertaining to SCG’s and the duties of their position including prohibited law enforcement actions
  • Proper techniques for displaying and using hand traffic signals and the stop paddle. 
  • Proper wearing of the uniform and placement of the insignias
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
  • Current, valid Florida driver license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to hold 5lbs for up to 2 minutes (Stop Sign)
  • See at a normal range (20/20 with or without correction)
  • Hear at a normal level or with accommodation
  • Speak and understand English fluently
  • Ambulate independently
  • Bend and squat
  • Manual dexterity

Other Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of inspection procedures, issued equipment, and safety procedures
  • Ability to analyze problems quickly and take appropriate action under stress
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal orders
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, with respect for the rights of others
  • Ability to maintain emotional and psychological stability
  • Ability to remember names, faces, details of incidents, and physical surroundings
  • Skilled in the use and care of all issued law enforcement related equipment
  • Maintain the physical condition needed to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of a School Crossing Guard
  • Maintain the mental alertness needed to observe activities and implement appropriate action
