Pipeline Specialist II – Job Description


Duties & Responsibilities

- The Pipeline Specialist works with Regional locations to provide technical support for pipeline facilities/activities within the Region that include, but are not limited to: providing training, direction and technical assistance to field operating personnel; handle pipeline shut-out, start-up and PSSR procedure training, facilitation, review and approval; handle skill qualification and operator qualification training and re-verifications of field operating personnel related to pipeline operations and maintenance; assist with assessing the root cause failure analysis of assigned abnormal operations, near misses, failures and incidents

- Responsible for the following: technical support, training, project development and execution, budget support and management, as well as support of corporate initiatives/projects.

- Ensure accuracy of survey data collection and proper analysis of data to insure pipeline coating, rectifier and ground-bed systems are providing corrosion protection for the pipeline (pertains to those certified by N.A.C.E)

- Comply with all applicable DOT and OSHA regulations, and safety policies and procedures

- Perform all duties of this position with a focus on safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance

- Perform installation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment

- Perform and provide technical support for installation, calibration, maintenance, and repairs of instrument and electrical equipment

- Perform planned maintenance checks and calibration and timely submits appropriate reports

- Maintain current and accurate documentation of maintenance activities

- Maintain technical and administrative records, including prints and project reports

- Active involvement in safety action plans

- Complete and maintains required safety/regulatory training

- Responsive to after-hours call outs for pigging, measurement, and communications down

- Perform routine maintenance of meter tubes and electronic flow computers/analyzer, and other quality spec monitors in system

- Supervise in changing technology/budget requirements; supervise direct reports and train contract crews

- Pursues cost reduction opportunities

- Minimize downtime and unsafe conditions by performing preventative and predictive maintenance

- Responsible for cathodic protection readings and rectifier maintenance (witness where applicable)

- Manage all aspects of assigned projects including design, procurement, contracts, construction/implementation, documentation, cost tracking and forecasting

- Assume lead role in addressing proposed encroachment activities by outside parties including landowner actions, road and highway projects, municipal and utility projects, developer and residential projects, etc.

- Provide a leadership role in the company’s response to pipeline emergencies and failures.

- Drive teamwork throughout the area of responsibility

- Perform other various tasks as assigned by the Foreman


Skills & Specifications

- Ability to work with a diverse team

- Able to operate valves, pack and purge lines

- Has basic computer skills; data entry into various electronic databases

- Ability to work safely and adhere to all company guidelines, policies, and procedures

- Has integrity, good communication skills, and a positive attitude

- Maintains good housekeeping in all areas of responsibility

- Must be detailed oriented and enjoy a fast paced, multi-tasking, customer service minded environment

- Must have experience with line encroachments and excavations

- Must be a self-starter, have good organizational skills and be able to accept constantly changing priorities with minimum supervision

- Must carry a cell phone and is subject to 24-hr/day callout at any time for emergency response

- Subject to hazardous conditions including escaping gas, adverse weather conditions and temperatures, heights, high-pressure gas, and cramped conditions

- Must be able to travel and travel may be extensive at times (requires 75% travel within area of responsibility)

- Subject to extended workdays and/or weekends


Education & Qualifications

- Possess a valid driver’s license, CDL a plus (may be required in some locations)

- Legally authorized to work in the United States

- Able to pass a pre-employment drug and background check

- Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited, state-certified program

- Certifications from trade schools and/or professional organizations are preferred

- Must be capable and willing to work overtime as required and participate in an on-call rotation

- Knowledgeable in operating and maintaining equipment within oil and gas facilities preferred

- Capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50lbs

- Capable of vigorous outdoor activities and have manual dexterity with physical ability to work extended hours, climbing, bending, kneeling, squatting, working with arms extended above the head, twisting upper body, standing for long periods, working in confined spaces, exposure to extreme weather conditions, driving a vehicle, operation of forklifts and light industrial equipment
