Are you detail-oriented and passionate about ensuring patient safety behind the scenes? We are seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team and play a vital role in supporting quality care. In this position, you’ll be responsible for receiving, cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing instruments and equipment used in medical procedures. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong technical skills, knowledge of sterilization practices, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative healthcare environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:  

  • Graduate of Medical Assistant Program or Central Sterilization Technician program.
  • Knowledge of central supply policies and procedures and medical practices.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices, as defined by current OSHA guidelines.
  • Skill in using sterilization equipment.
  • Skill in gathering, reporting, and classifying information.  
  • Ability to operate department machinery.
  • Ability to work with varying schedule and workload.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to take initiative, be self-directed, problem solve, and work independently.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral form.
  • Ability to utilize computer programs expected for patient care (Epic, SC Fox, etc.) and access patient information from the internet, and the ability to type at least 30 wpm.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Two years experience as medical assistant or central sterilization experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.

Essential Functions:  

  • Collect used instruments and trays from departments, receive instruments from satellite clinics.
  • Clean and disinfect instruments following established procedures including soaking, scrubbing, rinsing, and drying.
  • Examine instruments for defects, reject those not at acceptable standards, and arrange for repair and replacement.
  • Select proper instruments for building and wrapping trays following established departmental guidelines.
  • Autoclave trays and loose packed instruments using sterilizer.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used in sterile processing.
  • Assist in scheduling quarterly preventative maintenance.
  • Assemble and prepare linen packs for sterilization.
  • Perform designated quality assurance tests and accompanying documentation on each tray and instrument processed.
  • Maintain required log sheets and inventory sheets for tracking.
  • Perform routine check for outdates of processed packages, rotate supplies.
  • Mark instruments with identification tape to indicate areas of use.
  • Maintain clean and clutter free workspace.
  • Order necessary supplies for C/S department.
  • Order instruments for departments.
  • Assist with annual budgeting for instruments.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Assure proper instrument handling and processing at satellite clinics through periodic site visits and staff education.
  • Adhere to safe principles of lifting and ergonomics.

Other Duties:  

  • Provide in-service training for other staff as required.
  • Orient other staff as assigned.
  • Assist in writing, reviewing, and updating departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
