At Mahaska Health the primary role of a Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for leadership and coordination of the personnel involved in the provision of competent nursing services within the Birthing Center where staff provide direct and indirect patient care. Ensures adequate scheduling of personnel on the Birthing Center unit within the staffing guidelines set forth by the Director of Birthing Center and/or Chief Nursing Officer. Communicates professionally, timely, and appropriately with all team members. As a Registered Nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Coordinates patient education and activities of interdisciplinary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing in accordance with the established methods and procedures of Mahaska Health.
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to,
  • Assists the Birthing Center Director in evaluating nursing team member performance on the unit.
  • Provides nursing care to patients utilizing The Nursing Process determined by the patients’ assessed needs:
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide adequate levels of competent staffing as evidenced by:
    • Reviews staffing on a daily basis (Monday through Friday) and coordinates with the house supervisor to provide adequate staffing for the Birthing Center unit.
    • Provides creative solutions to staffing dilemmas in a timely and proactive manner.
    • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours as needed to maintain acceptable/safe staffing patterns on the unit (i.e. call offs, PTO, FMLA, classes/courses, staffing shortages).
    • Communicates professionally, timely, and appropriately with team members, house supervisors, and directors.
    • Assumes responsibility for provision of adequate and timely orientation of personnel.
    • Demonstrates the ability to plan, coordinate, and direct nursing services as evidenced by:
    • Notifies Director of Birthing Center and/or Chief Nursing Officer of all unusual occurrences and of any practice or staffing concerns, discipline needs, patient/physician complaint concerning the department. Assists in the investigation of variances on the unit.
  • Function effectively in crisis and emergent situations.
  • Coaches staff to appropriately assess patients according to standards of care for diagnosis/are.
  • Audits, monitors, and records data to ensure that documentation by team members is complete and provides a clear and current assessment of patient’s status.
  • Is a role model in terms of his/her technical skills. Can perform at a level of competency equal to or above that of the nursing personnel he/she supervises.
  • Adapt to needed changes in workload or patient assignment.
  • Assist director with quality insurance and performance improvement through data collection and reporting
  • Assist in the mentoring and orientation of new personnel to unit.
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • A graduate from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa (or) a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse able to work in the state of Iowa.
  • At least two years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) in labor and delivery.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Preferred.
  • Successfully completes orientation and continuing in-service education.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Required to be current in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Required to be certified in NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) within one year of hire.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
