About the Department
Position Duties
- Gathers data and analyzes information on the animals; arranges and processes animals for adoption, animal transports and animal transfers both locally and out of state
- Plans, prepares and coordinates all animal adoption activities to include budgets, timelines and promotions for events both on and off-site
- Markets and promotes adoption themes to attract public awareness to the adoption program; oversee the program to find care for special needs animal and help promote their adoptability; engages community residents, volunteers and other community based organizations
- Ensures welfare and proper care of animals within the shelter facility is maintained at all times; works with veterinarians to ensure that animals are healthy for transport
- Assists customers with finding the right adoptive match by helping with animal meet; reviews and approves adoption applications
- Develops and maintains accurate information and detailed process for intake, outcome, medical, and other animal records
- Assists with managing the development, implementation, and maintaining of all goals, objectives, policies, priorities, enforcement, facility operations/services, and activities; assists in the planning, budgeting and operation of the Facility
- Assists with coordinating and overseeing the volunteer program; assists with directing and evaluating the work of the staff and volunteers
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with outside adoption agencies (local and out of state)
- Responds to questions from the public and County/City officials; assists with coordinating any media releases/responses
- Feeds, medicates animals and assists with other medical procedures; cleans kennels and surrounding areas in accordance with proper control requirements
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate and two (2) years' animal shelter experience
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances dealing with animal care activities; knowledge of the activities and operations of an animal care/housing facility; knowledge of principals and techniques for properly handling and caring for injured animals
- Skill in customer service; skill in interpreting, explaining, and ensuring compliance with policies, procedures and regulations; skill in operating office equipment to include computer equipment and software programs (Pet-Point and associated reports)
- Ability to handle physically and emotionally stressed animals; ability to work independently in the absence of supervision; ability to communicate and make presentations to large and small groups, effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside organizations and the general public
- Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- Operating light and medium pick-up trucks with trailer (may be required to demonstrate proficiency in handling and backing stock trailer into a space limited environment)
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek; required to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; when required, shall work extra hours, holidays, weekends and other shifts
- Four (4) years' experience working in a municipal, county, federal or private animal care/housing facility
- Four (4) years' experience working with the public
- Two (2) years' experience working animal adoption and/or live outcomes
- Must have a Texas Animal Control Officer certification or be able to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment
- Must have a Euthanasia certification or be able to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment
- Associate's Degree in Animal Management, Animal Shelter Management, Pet Sciences and/or Humane Leadership or another health based degree or closely related field
- Constantly working in outdoor conditions with exposure to temperature variations, and varied weather conditions
- Exposure to insects, insect and animal bites, flammable liquids, cramped work areas, dust, damp/wet/dirty surfaces, poisonous plants, oily surfaces, high noise areas, chemical and biological irritants, noxious odors and fumes sometimes requiring the use of protective equipment and breathing apparatus
- Exposure to animals of unknown temperament and background
- Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-25 pounds
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 50-100 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
