REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
One year experience as a surgical PA-C.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Graduation from a Physician’s Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education programs (CAAHEP).
Certification by the National Committee on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
REQUIRED LICENSE:
Physician’s Assistant License from the State of Michigan
Maintain BLS Certification
PREREQUISITE SKILLS:
- Expertise in the theory and application of Physician Assisting in surgery.
- Demonstrated competency with application of sterile and aseptic technique.
- Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
- Oral communication skills required to communicate appropriately and effectively with the entire surgical team.
- Written and computer skills required for appropriate documentation.
- Possess the skills necessary to function as an effective high performing team member.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area.
- Orthopedic surgical experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following functions describe the essential duties of this role. Individuals in this role may not perform all of these duties, or may perform additional, related duties not listed here.
- Provides direct patient care as a representative of the physician treating the patient in a style and manner developed and directed by the supervising physician and consistent with authorized practice as defined by state law.
- Examples of PA-C roles in the perioperative arena include:
- Intraoperative surgical first-assisting
- Transferring patients
- Positioning the patient
- Using instruments/medical devices
- Providing exposure
- Handling and/or cutting of tissue
- Providing hemostasis
- Suturing – closing of body planes
- Applying wound dressing
- Maintains working knowledge of all operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control, and individual requirements and recommended practices of compliance.
- Able to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other team members with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure.
- Maintains strong working relationship with all members of the operating room team and Center personnel.
- Keeps abreast of new technology with respect to surgical intervention and its pertinence to patient management.
- Completes job duties in a manner that promotes physician and patient satisfaction.
