About the Department

THE POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED;

The Benicia Public Library is currently seeking enthusiastic, flexible candidates for the position of Library Aide. Ideal applicants will be skilled multitaskers who are passionate about supporting the daily operations of a busy public library.

Library Aides play a key role in ensuring smooth day-to-day functions and are essential members of our team. Responsibilities include fulfilling patron hold requests, processing incoming deliveries from other libraries, checking in returned materials, and assisting with other tasks as needed.

We are looking to hire at least two Library Aides, each working approximately 12–16 hours per week. Current scheduling needs include Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with shifts from either 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM or 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, as well as one evening shift from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. (Please note: schedules are subject to change based on departmental needs.)

This is a part-time, at-will position and does not include insurance benefits.

Position Duties

Under close supervision, performs a variety of manual labor tasks, most specifically returning library materials to their proper location in proper alpha/numeric order in the library; performs related duties as required. 

This one-position class is designed to accomplish necessary and useful paraprofessional work in a library. This class is distinguished from the class of Departmental Aide in that the latter involves a greater variety of clerical functions. 

Minimum Qualifications

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Loads book trucks in alpha/numeric order
  • Sorts and shelves library materials.
  • Straighten and correct the order of library materials on shelves.
  • Pick up books and materials lying about on tables and out of shelves.
  • Retrieves requested materials from shelves or stored locations.
  • Assists library staff in special projects as assigned.
  • Acts as messenger carrying materials between the Library and other City departments (no driving required).
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Ability to:
 
  • Properly file both alphabetically and numerically.
  • Perform detailed tasks with accuracy.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Perform physical work, including lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs., bending, reaching, and stooping, as required.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
 
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
 
Experience: No experience required.
Education:  High school diploma or GED required. 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Applicants must be able to work a set schedule of hours, including night and/or weekends.
