About the Department
The Center for Social Justice is a center based at Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana that provides capital appellate and post-conviction representation to indigent people on Louisiana’s death row, as well as juveniles facing sentences of life without parole. CSJ Paralegals provide clerical support to attorneys and teams representing clients in state and federal courts throughout Louisiana, with the assistance of students at Loyola. The position entails extensive and voluminous document analysis, management and tracking, as well as periodic litigation support, primarily at evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts. Strong organizational skills are required. Besides document management, primary tasks include drafting correspondence, records collection, record and transcript summarization, database management, non-legal research and occasional client and witness contact.
Position Duties
- Document management, analysis and tracking
- Electronic and physical file management and organization
- Litigation support, including at evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts
- Drafting correspondence and pleadings
- Compiling and filing writs and other pleadings
- Record and transcript summarization
- Non-legal research
- Communication with clients
- Records collection
- Manage mail and other correspondence under the direction of team members
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum Associates degree or Certification or Paralegal Studies. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 1 year of paralegal or equivalent related legal assistant experience.
- Experience with data management.
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proficient typing skills
- Ability to research in a proficient and timely manner
- Demonstrated ability to work well with teams.
- Commitment to client-centered representation
- Must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license as a condition of employment, and must also be able to successfully pass any driver background information investigation and any driver education courses required by Risk Management.
- Willingness to work outside of business hours and travel
- Prior criminal defense experience or experience working with people impacted by the criminal justice system (either as someone accused of a crime, victim of a crime, or family member of either).
