Position Summary
The CTE Maritime Transportation Teacher delivers instruction in maritime transport, navigation,
seamanship, and related technical skills for high school students (grades 9–12). This role
integrates classroom theory, simulation-based training, lab work, and industry-aligned practical
experiences. The teacher will cultivate partnerships with local marine businesses, port
authorities, and higher education institutions to support internships, certifications, and student
pipelines into maritime careers.
Duties & Responsibilities
● Deliver curriculum in topics such as navigation, ship operations, maritime safety,
seamanship, cargo handling, tides, currents, and logistics.
● Facilitate and supervise maritime simulator training (e.g. ship-handling, navigation
scenarios) and incorporate simulations into instructional units.
● Lead hands-on maritime labs or field projects, such as small-boat operations, chart
plotting, environmental sampling, port logistics, or vessel maintenance.
● Support students in obtaining industry-recognized credentials (e.g. STCW, safety,
navigation officer licenses).
● Coordinate with industry partners (ports, shipyards, Coast Guard, maritime firms) to
arrange guest lectures, field visits, internship placements, and mentorships.
● Maintain student records, performance data, and simulator logs; analyze outcomes to
adjust instruction.
● Serve on the CTE advisory council to review program goals, update curriculum, and
maintain alignment with industry standards.
● Assist with recruiting and outreach to attract students to the maritime pathway; present
at parent nights, career fairs, and community events.
● Participate in professional development, CTE meetings, and Ohio’s career-technical
education initiatives.
● Ensure laboratory and simulator areas comply with safety standards, maintain
equipment, and manage consumables and supplies.
Desired Qualifications
Required:
● Demonstrated content knowledge in maritime transport, navigation, marine operations,
or related field.
● Ability to teach and coach technical and theoretical maritime concepts.
● Strong communication, collaboration, and instructional design skills.
● Demonstrated willingness to partner with industry, community, and higher education
institutions.
● Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, Maritime
Studies, Engineering, or related field.
● Valid Ohio Career-Technical Workforce Development (CTWD) or Career-Technical
Education (CTE) license with endorsement in a relevant pathway. The teacher must
complete CTE-36 (work experience validation) and CTE-37 (program validation by
district) if hired out of industry.
● Completion of at least one Ohio OAE (Ohio Assessments for Educators) examination:
the professional knowledge (pedagogical) exam and the content exam aligned with the
CTE area.
● Must satisfy Ohio BCI and FBI background checks.
● Proper licensure or certification per Ohio’s rules for CTE instruction (i.e. in good standing
with the Ohio Department of Education).
Preferred:
● Master’s degree in Technical Education, Maritime Studies, Curriculum & Instruction, or
related field.
● Prior teaching or training experience in CTE, technical education, or maritime fields
● Additional credentials in CTE instruction, adult learning, or curriculum design.
● Familiarity with Ohio’s CTE/CTWD systems, end-of-course exams, and program
approval processes
● Prior completion of advanced professional development in maritime or transportation
education.
● Professional maritime certifications or licensure (e.g. U.S. Coast Guard officer license,
STCW credentials)
● Experience working with simulators or maritime lab equipment
● Experience facilitating internships or work-based learning in maritime sectors
Physical Demands
● Lab and simulation environments: standing, walking, bending, and positioning students
during hands-on activities.
● Occasional lifting or moving of instructional equipment, tools, and teaching aids (up to
~25-40 lbs).
● Frequent indoor/outdoor work (simulator labs, field trips, port or dockside visits).
● Prolonged use of computer systems, instruments, and monitoring of simulator panels.
● Ability to safely navigate vessel or dockside settings and adhere to safety protocols.
● Must supervise students in various environments, ensuring rigorous safety standards in
maritime activities.
