About the Department
Structural Engineering Senior positions supervise and lead the work of subordinates engaged in the review of proposed building designs to ensure compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to structural strength, sound insulation, fire resistance, life safety, and disabled access; conduct research and determine the acceptability of new materials and methods of construction; attend meetings and make presentations; prepare publications; review and research the use of alternate methods and materials, and code modifications; develop and write applicable codes; prepare reports and correspondence; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Structural Engineering Senior employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer are eligible for 31% additional pay.
- In addition to the above 31% pay, employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Structural Engineer are eligible for 5% additional pay.
Position Duties
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
REGISTRATION: Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer or Structural Engineer with the State of California.
EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time professional structural engineering experience in structural design or public agency structural plan checking, which MUST include one year of full-time professional journey-level experience at a level equivalent to a Structural Engineering Associate with the City of San Diego (a position that reviews building plans of buildings and structures such as single-family dwellings, apartment buildings, mid-to high-rise buildings, large commercial buildings, and interior modifications of buildings with moderate to high degree of complexities).
NOTES:
- The following experience does NOT qualify as professional structural engineering experience: Plan checks of residential one- and two-story additions, interior alterations, minor accessory structures, water or sewer structures, and construction inspection.
- A Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis in structures may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
CERTIFICATE: A valid International Code Council (ICC) Certificate as a Building Plans Examiner will be required within two years from date of hire.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Registration as a Structural Engineer with the State of California.
- Supervisory experience performing the full range of supervisory duties (e.g., employee selection, reviewing/approving time cards, preparing performance evaluations, training, disciplining employees and recommending commendations).
- Experience in code research and the evaluation of alternative materials or methods of construction.
- Proof of registration as a Professional Civil Engineer or Structural Engineer with the State of California.
- Proof of degree/transcript, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
- For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
Minimum Qualifications

Other Qualifications
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
