About the Department

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide accurate and professional interpretation services. The position also plays a vital part in supporting the Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) English as a Second Language (ESL) program by engaging with multilingual families and providing consultation on student language development and academic planning. This role serves Limited English Proficient (LEP) families in all schools with interpreting and translation services of Spanish into English and English into Spanish,  and is responsible for coordinating vendor interpretation and translation services in all foreign languages. The position supports the English as a Second Language (ESL) Intake and Placement Specialist with identification of English Learners through facilitation of language proficiency assessments, determining appropriate class and grade placement, and effectively communicating ESL programs to LEP families.

Position Duties

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides professional interpretation services (English/Spanish) for CCPS, both virtually and in-person 

  • Utilizes interpretation equipment to provide professional simultaneous interpretation services

  • Provides translation (English/Spanish) of CCPS documents for district personnel, and coordinates translation services for other languages

  • At the request of principals and other district leaders, provides Spanish/English interpretation for parents, including during meetings, conferences, and student behavior hearings

  • Coordinates the recruitment and scheduling of interpreters for other languages; Manages requests from district personnel for assistance with interpretation and translation

  • Assists ESL Welcome Center personnel with conducting LEP parent interviews to obtain students’ academic backgrounds for more accurate intake and placement

  • Assists ESL Welcome Center personnel with language proficiency testing and identification requirements, as well as score requests from other districts;Assists with staff preparation, in-service training, and record-keeping related to testing, as needed

  • Coordinates testing for, and exemption from, state-mandated tests for LEP students

  • Assists ESL Welcome Center personnel with student registration and data entry, as needed

  • Performs other duties as requested


Budgetary Responsibility:

This position does not have any budgetary responsibility.


Report Preparation:

This position may be responsible for preparing various reports, as requested by the supervisor.


Equipment Operation

Uses standard office equipment and equipment related to the educational area assigned


Contacts: 

Contact with all levels of CCPS personnel, students, and parents


Work Direction/Supervision:

This position may provide work direction to other interpreters as needed, but does not have any direct reports.


Decision Making:  

Functions independently within the context of daily activities

This position does not have any formal policy-setting responsibilities.


Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. May be occasionally required to lift and carry instructional materials usually under 25 pounds. 


Work Environment

Work is performed in various CCPS locations, including schools and offices, as well as other locations within the community, as needed. The noise level will vary based on location, but is typically quiet to moderate.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of best practices and confidentiality requirements regarding interpreting procedures and routines. Demonstrated ability to train others on best practices related to working with interpreters and interpreting services. Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English as a Second Language and of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of ESL instruction.  Working knowledge of language instruction education program implementation, and of second language acquisition learning theory. Working skill in the use of technology to deliver and assess testing and instruction.  Demonstrated ability: to assess language acquisition and use state-mandated tests with all English Learners(K-12); to organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, while maintaining tone, intention, style, and wording; to employ sound decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, and planning; and to foster strong interpersonal relationships. 

Other Qualifications

Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license, with an endorsement in English as a Second Language. Certification in Community Interpreter Training, or successful completion of certification within the first 6 months of employment. Flexibility for occasional non-standard scheduling, based on need (evening and weekend hours). Valid Virginia Driver’s License. This position requires the incumbent to drive.

Preferred: Master’s Degree and prior ESL teaching experience
