Job Description
Definition
Under general supervision, processes and classifies book and media materials for school libraries; works with all phases of books, periodicals, media, and similar library materials circulation; assists students and teachers in using library/media materials; circulates audiovisual and media equipment and software; performs servicing and minor maintenance; does typing and general clerical duties; and does related work as may be required.
Examples of Duties
Assists with the classification of books, audiovisual, and media materials, and assists librarian in cataloging; prepares shelf lists, and lists of audiovisual software; processes books, media software and periodicals; repairs and binds books; assists in weeding out the library collection; shelves library books, read shelves for correct book order; makes up daily schedule sheets, maintains daily statistics on circulation and use of library; trains student assistants assigned to the library; picks up, sorts, and routes mail and newspapers, answers telephone; assists in inventory of books, furniture and equipment; types overdue library notices and book lists, prepares cost notices of lost books and performs a variety of typing, record keeping, and filing duties; maintains schedule and record of audiovisual materials and equipment used by teachers, delivers equipment, cleans, services, and does minor repairs to equipment, helps with equipment problems in classrooms, keeps records of equipment use and maintains inventory records.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Library methods, practices, and terminology including the Dewey Decimal System; alphabetizing and filing methods, record keeping, and routine statistical compilation; card catalog and basic reference sources; English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and math.
Ability to: Learn the operation and function of a variety of audiovisual and media equipment; communicate effectively with library users; order, process, distribute, and maintain discipline and order among students using the library; understand and carry out written and oral direction.
Skills
Keyboard at a speed of 15 words per minute or better. Library Technician Assistant or Library Media Technical Assistant Certificate desirable.
Education and Experience
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Library Science coursework desirable.
Experience: Prior experience working in a library.
Physical demands and working conditions:
Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
Requirements / Qualifications
1. Completed EDJOIN application
2. Copy of high school diploma or GED certificate, or copy of transcripts showing high school graduation date.
3. Certificate of keyboarding typing of 15 WPM or more must include the following: a) Name of Organization administering the exam, b) Your Name, first and last, c) Date exam was taken (within the past 12 months), d) Certificate must be hand signed by proctor of the exam, e) ONLINE tests are not acceptable
4. Experience working in the library setting or in clerical setting
5. Library Technician Assistant or Library Media Technical Assistant Certificate desirable
Comments and Other Information
Prior to employment, all applicants are subject to a fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and a fee for processing. Authorization of employment will not be granted until the fingerprint clearance from DOJ has been accepted.
CURRENT EMPLOYEES SHALL REMAIN IN A POSITION FOR AT LEAST ONE (1) YEAR FROM THE BEGINNING DATE OF AN INITIAL PROBATION OR PROMOTIONAL PROBATIONARY PERIOD (PER CONTRACT, ARTICLE 15).
