Inside the Role
The Material and Process Technology (MPT) department at DTNA is looking for a Welding & Materials Engineer to join our team. The MPT Materials Engineer is responsible for providing welding and material analysis expertise throughout the product lifecycle of traditional and advanced drivetrain components. The Welding and Materials Engineer supports internal business partners, such as Production, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, R&D, and Supplier Management, from ideation through end of life to ensure Daimler and industry requirements are fulfilled.

Position offers a starting salary range of $90,000 - $115,000 USD

Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, and experience

What You Drive at DTNA

  • Laser Safety Officer for 3 million sqf heavy duty automotive machining and assembly facility

  • Identify emerging technological developments in the world of materials, materials characterization, and material processing (with a focus on welding and joining) and implement at Daimler Truck or our external partners where applicable.

  • Provide material and materials process expertise for internal and external partners to solve materials process development, component development, and reliability concerns.

  • Demonstrated expertise in standard materials laboratory practices such as sample preparation, metallography, materials characterization, and mechanical property testing.

  • Determine equipment and analysis required to understand when material demands are met.

  • Perform material process analyses, such as material joining, heat treatment, casting, and forging, of internal and external partners to ensure adherence to internal and external standards, and/or solve development or reliability concerns.

  • Interpret material specifications and requirements as they apply to Daimler Truck powertrain components.

  • Identify opportunities and drive improvements for both internal and external partners.

  • Utilize industry standard problem-solving methodologies (8D, Shainin, or Six Sigma) to fix concerns for internal and external partners.

  • Value global collaboration and encourage global colleagues to engage in knowledge sharing across multiple regions and business units.

  • Recognizes cultural differences in a global environment and effectively collaborates within this diverse environment.

  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate detailed technical facts and concepts through both written and verbal communication with global internal and external partners.

  • Weld Quality and welding process support for various in-house processes including electron beam, laser, and manual welding operations

  • Technical resource for design, integration, installation, successful launch, and continuous improvement of welding and joining equipment and processes

  • Technical resource for development and launch of supplier welding and joining processes

  • Technical resource for internal partners including Research and Development, Manufacturing, Facilities Maintenance, and Material Failure Analysis    

  • Global collaboration to develop internal and supplier welding and joining standards    

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering-with a focus on Welding Technology, or Material Science Engineering –with a focus on Welding Technology and prefer 2 years of relevant experience or 4 years of experience in lieu of a degree

  • Thorough understanding of welding, joining, and non-destructive testing techniques

  • LSO Certification for Laser Safety or the ability to become certified

  • Experience with AWS and ISO Joining specifications

  • Knowledge of 8D, Shainin Red X, or other advanced problems solving techniques

  • Experience with Electron Beam and Laser welding equipment and techniques

  • Minimum 1 year of experience with ferrous, copper, or aluminum alloys and their processing techniques

  • Minimum 1 year of Experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy or other advanced microscopy techniques

  • Minimum 1 year of experience using Optical Microscopy

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Non-Destructive Testing techniques (MPI, Dye penetrant, radiography, etc.)


Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • Ability to recognize cultural differences in a global environment and effectively collaborate

  • Ability to speak German, or Spanish

  • Familiarity with automotive PPAP

  • Ability to provide cross-functional leadership across diverse working teams

  • Knowledge of advanced adhesives, sealants, and other advanced joining technologies and processes

  • Knowledge of EV battery joining processes

  • Experience with failure analysis methodologies

  • Demonstrated supplier development experience.

  • Experience with stainless steels.
