At Mahaska Health the primary role of the Patient Care Technician is to participate with the oncology care team in the delivery of the patient's plan of care under the immediate supervision of the RN, including assisting with departmental procedures, providing hands on patient care, and reporting pertinent information to the appropriate team members.  Facilitates the smooth operation of the oncology care center by coordinating non-clinical operations such as maintenance of patient charts and departmental records, the efficient processing of departmental information, and maintenance of departmental supplies.
Essential job functions, including but not limited to,
  • Assists the patient and support system to provide a positive care experience.
  • Integrate principles of patient-centered care into practice including compassionate and kind care with respect to individual care circumstances.
  • Enters patient information directly into the electronic health record and reports results to RN.
  • Assists in purposefully rounding patients as needed or directed by RN.
  • Assist the nurse with the care of the patient to facilitate a positive experience throughout the patient's treatment plan.
  • Assists in answering patient care requests and responding promptly.
  • Demonstrates commitment to personal growth and competence to maintain knowledge of current procedures and new trends.
  • Provides clerical support for the department.
  • Provides support as directed for operations in the department as directed by RN.
  • Sort and store incoming care specific equipment, instruments and supplies in identified locations.
  • Assists with the maintenance and stocking of supplies, checking for outdated supplies, within established budgetary guidelines to promote cost effective patient care.
  • Begin inventory on assigned shift to ensure adequacy of supplies in the cancer care center areas.
  • Answer the telephone and greet customers in a courteous manner.
  • Transports patient as requested according to the patient transport procedure.
  • Helps lift and position patients safely.
  • Participates in educating and orienting of new staff members as assigned.
  • Under the direction of the nurse, assists with the care of the adult (i.e. temp, vitals, blood glucose monitoring, etc.).
  • Adjusts to changes in team/patient priorities as determined by the RN.
  • Collects and applies age-specific data.
  • Communicates and works with others in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Maintains knowledge and operation of patient safety and security protocols.
  • Attends required safety programs.
  • Appropriately and consistently use the personal protective equipment required of the job.
  • Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster, and other emergency situations.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Attend meetings, as requested.
  • All other duties as assigned or requested.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • 75-hour CNA course certification required.
  • Must be listed on the Iowa Nurse Aide Registry at time of hire.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of MH’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, Mahaska Health Experience Book and all supporting policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
