About the Department

SUMMARY 
The Corrections Technician shall be responsible to perform clerical and control room duties for the Josephine County Adult Jail, the direct supervisor being the sergeant in charge. The Corrections Technician will participate in the daily operation of the control center but does not perform corrections officer duties.

NATURE AND SCOPE
The Corrections Technician is responsible for the monitoring, via closed circuit television, and movement of inmates within the jail allowing operators to visually monitor inmates and staff within the area. Central control has additional audio and visual monitors with which to monitor doors and areas outside of their view. The Corrections Technician is also called on to make on the spot decisions without the luxury of a supervisor being constantly present. They must work independently on a day-to-day basis, relying on specialized training and a keen sense of good judgment to assist them in these important matters that confront them constantly. 
 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Central Control will monitor via closed circuit monitors the following: Floor deputies’ status; inmates housed in single cells on high security watches; and all aspects of inmates’ daily activities in housing pods. 
  2. Central Control performs as the centralized communication center within the jail. Normal communication functions include: Operation and monitoring of a two-way intercom system throughout the jail; monitoring and electronically opening all doors within the jail; monitoring an visually verifying the identity of staff and inmates during activities and movement; monitoring intercoms constantly for signs of trouble; monitoring closed-circuit video cameras at all times; monitoring and operating alarm annunciation panel for fire emergencies and operating two-way radios to maintain communication with deputies working in the jail. 
  3. Answering and transferring telephone calls. Maintaining communication with 911/Dispatch and other law enforcement agencies during jail fires, riots and/or other emergencies. 
  4. Perform a variety of clerical and record keeping duties involving criminal matters being processed in the Josephine County Adult Jail. 
  5. Perform all other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS 
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Additional qualifications include: Ability to learn new techniques, learn to operate new equipment and software programs and to adapt quickly to changing work requirements in a high intensity work atmosphere; substantial ability to perform and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks; operate variety office equipment appropriately and efficiently; and interpret and retain Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, intergovernmental and interagency contracts, and extensive resource information. This position requires the specific knowledge of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Law Enforcement as well as general knowledge of county wide departmental functions and procedures.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associates degree in office administration or related field and four years of progressively responsible secretarial and/or administrative experience; or, high school graduation or equivalency and five years of progressively responsible secretarial and/or administrative experience; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties. Experience in law enforcement or similar field preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
May be required to obtain and maintain current LEDS certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
Ability to understand and follow multiple complex written and oral instructions. Must have full command of English composition, spelling, and grammar. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITIES 
Ability to communicate effectively when cooperation may be difficult to achieve. To establish and maintain a positive, harmonious working relationship with fellow employees, state, county, other law enforcement personnel, and social agencies. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
Ability to training others and direct their work. Must be able to type 40 wpm, and must pass a written test, typing test and oral interview. Skill and proficiency with various standard and specialized office machines is required, to include: word processor, computer data entry and retrieval systems, and complex telephone and radio systems.
 

Other Qualifications

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION 
Those employed in this position may be subject to pre-employment drug testing/physical examination and a background investigation, including criminal background investigation. Conviction of a crime will not necessarily disqualify an individual for this classification. Must pass and maintain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) security clearance.
