About the Department

The Recruit will be sponsored by the Ocoee Fire Department to attend as a full-time Recruit with a local full-time Fire Academy and EMT class, if needed. Progression to a full-time, regular position upon successful completion of the Fire Academy and becoming certified as a Firefighter in the State of Florida, depending on the number of vacancies. 
 
The City of Ocoee will pay 100% of the sponsored Recruit’s tuition, books, and academy uniforms. In addition, while the Recruit attends the academy they are considered a City of Ocoee temporary employee and will be paid hourly up to 40 hours per week for the hours they are attending the academy. 

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Possession of a State of Florida valid Florida Driver's License. United States Citizenship and at least 19 years of age. No convictions of a felony or a misdemeanor which involved perjury or a false statement. Not have pled guilty or nolo contendere after July 1, 1981, to a felony or a misdemeanor which involves perjury or a false statement, whether or not adjudication was withheld or sentence suspended Not have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the 
Armed Forces of the United States. Recruit must pass a background check 

Other Qualifications

Substantial knowledge of scientific and technical principles and methods regarding fire suppression, prevention and safety. 
 
Substantial knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures. 
 
Substantial knowledge and skills in the operation and maintenance of various types of apparatus and equipment used in firefighting activities. 
 
Knowledge of basic life support as applied to emergency treatment. 
 
Knowledge of City geography including location of fire hydrants. 
 
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency conditions. 
 
Ability to operate heavy fire apparatus safely and efficiently. 
 
Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions. 
 
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other Fire agencies, and the general public.
