Description

We are looking for a driven and detail oriented Sr. Database Engineer to help author the next chapter of our growth. The Sr. Database Engineer will design, build, and operate highly scalable and reliable modern data platforms focusing on cloud native databases such as (but not limited to) Oracle, Amazon Aurora (MySQL), and Amazon Redshift. This role will primarily focus on Database Administration and Engineering tasks for Oracle.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives 

  • Act as a technical resource for The Data Team.
  • Advises The Data Team teammates on improving selection of methods and techniques. Proactively drive change in how business and technical users approach access and data storage problems, improving their analysis, development, and access. 
  • Works to identify unmet database architecture needs and work with the Data Team to fill them, acting as the project manager from ideation to completion. Proactively looks for ways to improve database architecture team tools and methods, reports back to team. 
  • Utilize up-to-date coding, testing, security, DevOps, and software engineering practices to create and maintain database solutions.
  • Utilize programming/scripting languages to enhance automation and REST/Graph APIs to create, maintain, and automate database solutions.
  • Engage in migration opportunities from current supported technologies to cloud based solutions such as AWS cloud hosted solutions.
  • Update documentation and standards for what "best practices in designing and developing data architecture" means. Develops database architecture in support of KPIs reporting and analysis for their area of the business.
  • Participate in planning, building and running enterprise class information management solutions across a variety of technologies (e.g. big data, master data, data profiling, batch processing, data modeling, and data indexing technologies,).
  • Ensure appropriate policies are followed for information access, analysis, and dissemination. Responsible for the analysis, design, deployment, maturity, and support of database solutions. 
  • Define and apply information quality and consistency business rules throughout the data processing lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with information providers to ensure database updates are processed in a timely fashion.
  • Participate in the development, enforcement and expansion of the use of a Stax Common Data Model and industry standard information descriptions (ontologies, taxonomies, vocabularies, lexicons, dictionaries, thesaurus, glossaries etc.). Manage the backend systems and databases that support the information portal and its customer-facing resources (data catalog, data portal, etc.).
  • Understand team priorities and proactively identify when work queues need to be adjusted to match priorities. 
  • Proactively communicates project risk. Works with team leads to helps unblock team members
  • Participate in vendor product reviews, evaluations, demonstrations, proofs of concept, and implementations.
  • Exhibit DevOps and Agile mindset for data solutions from inception to sunset.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience working with cloud native relational databases. 
  • Expert level understanding of operating and scaling relational cloud databases including Oracle, Amazon Aurora (MySQL), SQL Server, and Amazon Redshift. 
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and their interfaces to databases. Node.js or PHP would be ideal. 
  • Understanding of database architecture concepts such as data modeling, metadata, workflow management, ETL/ELT, real-time streaming, data quality 
  • Capability to conduct data access performance analysis, troubleshooting, and remediation.      
  • Experience with code management tools (e.g. Git) and DevOps tools. 
  • Understanding of agile project approaches and methodologies. 
  • Strong analytical problem-solving ability. 
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a project team. 
  • Experience in a several data processing roles such as database developer/administrator, ETL developer, data analyst, BI analytics developer, and/or solution developer of contextual search applications.
  • Experience with NoSQL data tools, SAS Analytics, R, and Amazon Web Services preferred. 
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, Python, Java, C++, Scala, Ruby "fluent" and has solid working knowledge of data analytics, development (code) and storage.
  • Experience with Redshift, Aurora MySQL, RDS SQL Server, and Oracle.
  • Experience with Data Build Tool (DBT), Datagrip, AWS Glue, Stitch Data, and FiveTran.
  • Experience with Erwin Data Modeler.
  • Ability to deploy applications/functions to public cloud platforms through industry tools utilized by Stax. (e.g., FiveTran, DBT, Terraform, GitLab, etc.).
  • Proficient in source code management tools like Git. Experience implementing and supporting automated change management practices and CI/CD pipelines (GitOps).
  • Experience with scripting languages and serverless code / integration (i.e., cloud-based) capabilities to automate processes.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices, software design patterns, testing techniques, and software security scanning practices.
  • Strong understanding of Cloud Computing including AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and multi-cloud environments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining operational procedure documentation and architecture diagrams, roadmaps, industry research summaries, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to various audiences.
  • Holds self and Database Architecture teammates to high quality standards.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Agile methodologies, scrum and Kanban frameworks experience.
  • New solution prototyping.


Additional Details

  • May be required to work nights and weekends.
  • Suggested security certifications may include CISSP, GSEC, CISM, CRISC, GCIA, GREM.
  • Suggested cloud certifications may include AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Fundamentals. Microsoft Certified Security, Compliance & Identity Fundamentals.
