About the Department
Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to coordinates communications plans and strategies to communicate with employees and the public. Responsibilities may vary dependent upon assigned department.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
• Coordinates with department management and administration to develop and implement effective communications programs and products.
• Develops timely and effective communications, including electronic and print newsletters, electronic and printed flyers, intranet website, public website, and social media postings and responses.
• Composes, edits and proofs content items and materials, and marks up, pastes, and assembles final layout for posting on websites and for printing.
• Designs and composes other documents and publications including speaking points, website text, graphic content, and social media.
• Maintains database records of contributors, prepares reports, and completes special projects.
• Contacts printers and photographers to discuss ideas and specifications for printing, photographs, artwork and graphic needs Coordinates deadlines and print schedules.
• Designs, produces and coordinates graphics, art and copy layouts for print and electronic publications.
• Researches and studies objectives, policies and needs of the organization to develop public and employee relations strategies to promote ideas, products and services.
• Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning artwork, desktop publishing, layout, and graphic presentation, and distribution of communications.
• Coordinates deadlines, print schedules and posting of information.
• Coaches others in effective communication with employees and the public.
• Represents the department to other agencies, community groups, organizations, media and the public to provide information and answer questions.
• Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Education, English, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related discipline.
• Three (3) years of community or public relations, internal communications program, marketing, desktop publishing or graphic design experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)
