About the role

Public Sector People is proudly partnering with the City of Sydney to recruit an experienced and Chartered Civil Engineer for the position of Chief Engineer. This role will lead the delivery of high-quality infrastructure and asset management outcomes for the community, ensuring the safety, functionality and sustainability of the City’s public domain.

The Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive Director City Services, the Chief Engineer leads the City’s civil infrastructure and asset management functions. This role oversees roads, pedestrian spaces, lighting, stormwater and the public domain, as well as corporate asset management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of managers and staff, overseeing a workforce of over 60 direct and indirect employees.
  • Manage multi-million-dollar operational and capital budgets, ensuring effective delivery and financial performance.
  • Oversee asset management programs covering roads, footpaths, stormwater, street furniture and lighting.
  • Provide expert advice on traffic, pedestrian and parking matters, including managing the Sydney Traffic Committee.
  • Manage large-scale contracts, procurement processes and service level agreements.
  • Build productive relationships with councillors, government, contractors and the community.
  • Drive innovation in asset management maturity and service delivery.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Extensive local government experience in civil infrastructure leadership.
  • Strong track record in asset management, systems and planning.
  • Proven capability in contract management, procurement and financial oversight.
  • Skilled people leader with the ability to influence across multiple stakeholders.
