Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: | Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Basic knowledge of computers. Basic knowledge of standard office equipment. Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Demonstrates flexibility, ability to multi-task and effective organizational and interpersonal skills. |
Primary Functions:
1. Evaluates new and existing clients in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Assesses the physical and
psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, laboratory
studies and diagnostic studies.
2. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
3. Performs and/or assists with diagnostic and operative procedures as outlined in the SCA.
4. Administers therapeutic measures/obtains specimens as prescribed.
5. Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests. Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical,
laboratory and radiographic assessment of patients.
6. Relays appropriate information regarding patient care to the collaborating physician.
7. Prescribes medication and blood products based on upon clinical assessment and laboratory results, and
initiates orders for routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures and care post discharge
in accordance with written practice protocols. Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation
of therapeutic plans consistent with the continuing health care needs of clients. Evaluates the quality of
care provided and recommends changes for improvement in the delivery of care.
8. Triages patients and provides emergency treatment when appropriate.
9. Dictates or writes patient history, admissions care plans, progress notes. Evaluates patients and makes changes to the treatment plan for existing patients in the outpatient setting. Dictates follow-up letters to referring physicians with summaries of treatment, patient response, and plan of care.
10. Determines eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials and recommends entry when appropriate.
11. Requests records and written consultations from physicians and other health care professionals to ensure
patients care is appropriate.
12. Provides preventative health services for patients and survivors (screening, risk assessments,
immunizations, etc.)
13. Assists the inpatient service in the coordination of discharge plans of hematology and oncology patients
and arranges for subsequent follow-up in clinic or with other health care providers, home care agencies,
pharmacies or referring physicians.
14. Establishes network of referral sources to serve as clinical resources for the CNP, the collaborating
physician and the patient population
15. Maintains contact with and serves as a consultant to home care agencies.
16. Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases
of the patients’ care. Considers the physical, emotional, social and economic status, cultural and
environmental backgrounds of individuals, families and communities when providing health care.
17. Provides on call support to patient and families when scheduled.
18. Ensures that departmental and interdepartmental policies, procedures and standards of care are
maintained and assists in interpreting these to patients and visitors.
19. Acts as a role model and resource person for administrators, staff and the community
20. Ensures and maintains patient/family confidentiality, privacy and patient’s rights at all times.
21. Informs supervisors and/or Vice President, Clinical & Nursing of actual/potential problems that require
resolution at the administrative level. Participates in quality improvement activities on an on-going basis.
Participates in staff meetings as necessary.
22. Bills and logs all revenue producing encounters as directed. Completes CPT and ICD-9/10 coding in
consultation with the collaborating physician.
23. Adheres to credential/privilege process in order to maintain clinical privileges.
24. Provides formal and informal education to nursing staff. Participates in development of education
materials for patients and health care providers. Assists with the development of curriculum,
presentations and programs for staff. Acts as a role model in appearance, demeanor and actions to
nursing staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of a Nurse Practitioner program that qualifies the graduate to sit for the certification examination of a national certifying organization recognized by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Master’s degree in Nursing. Current license and certificate of authority to practice as a CNP in the State of Ohio. Able to obtain a certificate to prescribe.
Experience: Three to five years of experience as a CNP.
