About the Department

Performs general service, tune-up, maintenance, and repair on a wide variety of City vehicles and equipment; maintains service records; and performs other work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a full working level classification in the Mechanic series where incumbents perform a wide variety of mechanical maintenance and repair duties on City vehicles and equipment.
This class is distinguished from the higher-level class of Senior Mechanic in that the latter serves as a lead worker, with responsibility for leading and monitoring the work of subordinate Mechanics and for coordinating day-to-day shop operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives general supervision from the Maintenance and Safety Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
License: Possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon drivers license by the time of appointment. Ability to obtain and retain a Class A license within one year of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Emission systems and associated test equipment.
Computerized engine standards.
Principles and operations of gasoline, diesel, and propane engines.
Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, and propane-powered vehicles, equipment and related parts.
Hydraulic and air brake systems, automotive electrical, carburetion, and cooling systems.
Hydraulic pumps, motors, and valves.
Standard shop safety procedures.
Basic computer operations, including standard business software.
Diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical and drivability problems associated with gasoline, diesel, and propane driven equipment.
Use various hand and power driven shop tools.
Use acetylene and arc weld equipment.
Maintain clear and accurate records.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Operate a personal computer and standard business software.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
