Perform technical and specialized work of a moderate grade of skill in connection with all types of electrical systems; analysis, detection and repair of defects in emissions monitoring, interlock and control systems, electronic devices including solid state equipment, communication systems, and instruments, such as: meters, gauges, solid state generator excitation controls, combustion controls, regulators, scales, coal handling, soot blower controls, and chlorination equipment.  Assist in engineering and environmental studies, and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment; and assist engineers in performing other technical services.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical

Perform basic skilled work pertaining to the inspection, repair and maintenance of all types of electrical equipment, including work such as:

Minor repairs on transformers, generators, coil repairs; minor repairs to air circuit breakers; analyzing, inspecting, testing and repairing of motors and their circuits for proper operations; correct troubles that may develop.

Perform skilled work with machine shop equipment which does not involve elaborate set-ups or set-ups requiring portable equipment.
 
 
Instruments:
 
Locate and repair defects in emissions monitoring and/or control systems involving electrical, solid state electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic components, using elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams, or control diagrams, along with a thorough knowledge of process control and regulated components.
 
Analyze, test, calibrate, and adjust relays and related circuits, electronic devices, meters, control circuits, communication systems, and similar circuits and devices.  Analyze data such as power and gas consumption, response, and temperatures on the performance of electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, reactors, voltage regulators and oil circuit breakers.
 
Install and complete all documentation associated with calibration gas cylinders.
 
Prepare detailed instructions or sketches for repairs or revisions to controls of all types.
 
Observe operation of and record readings on controlling, indicating, and recording/monitoring devices and compare with established standards or specifications relating to the equipment’s prescribed function to determine if normal sequence of operations is performed.
 
Assist engineers in preparing necessary data for engineering procedures, specifications, contracts, bills of material and requisitions for the installation, maintenance, and operation of equipment.
 
Use prints and necessary tools to install new instruments, such as meters, gauges, relays, and controls.
 
Analyze test and investigational data; calculate and convert test data to standard values; evaluate data and prepare reports relating to the results of tests and investigations.
 
Inspect the various component parts of all types of instruments, control and emissions monitoring systems and make adjustments or replacements to remedy faults in those not functioning properly.
 
Set up and connect testing devices and perform test on equipment such as boilers, turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, weigh scales, and fans; maintain test equipment.
 
Make arithmetical calculations in accordance with established procedures such as required in determining heat rate.
 
Use prints and instruments to locate trouble and make adjustments to equipment such as communication systems.
 
Set up and perform necessary work in order to gas and de-gas turbine generators, including testing for hydrogen leakage.
 
 
Maintenance

Assist with installing, calibrating, and maintaining single-element control systems and any single element of a multiple-impulse control system.

Assist with the set up and connect all testing devices and performance of tests on equipment such as boilers, turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, weigh scales, and fans; maintain test equipment, and prepare sketches, inspection and maintenance reports.

Assist with inspection on boilers, turbines, pumps, heat exchangers, and other power plant equipment; make working sketches for repairs, and prepare inspection and maintenance reports.

Assist with studies, as assigned, of plant operations and assist in investigations and analysis of these studies.

Environmental

Assist more experienced personnel with the following: Troubleshoot, inspect, adjust, calibrate and repair through diagnostic testing any emissions monitoring system device or peripheral piece of equipment, including, but not limited to:  compliance software, NOx monitors, SO2 monitors, CO2 monitors, CO monitors, Particulate Matter monitors, Sorbent Trap systems, Flow monitors, Data loggers, and probes.  Also must be able to recognize and carry out any and all documentation as required by the Company and regulatory agencies.

Using the appropriate software, prepare a sample run for a normal set of sorbent traps for the Sorbent Trap Systems.  Complete all record-keeping and chain of custody requirements as required.

Complete, including all paperwork, all required testing on CEMS/COMS/Hg environmental monitoring equipment as assigned.

General:

Perform similar maintenance work for temporary periods, as assigned, at other plants and stations.
 
Maintain equipment, tools and work areas in a clean and orderly condition; clean equipment, tools and work areas after completion of job.
 
Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
 
Instruct and direct the work of other employees assigned to assist in the work.
 
Perform duties in accordance with operating instructions, safety regulations, and current practices.
 
Perform similar or less skilled work, as assigned.
 
Be familiar with tools, equipment and clearance procedures, and the rules, safety practices, and procedures applicable to the work.
 
Perform duties in accordance with all applicable federal and state safety laws and regulations, and all applicable company safety rules and operating procedures.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

A two-year technical degree in electronics or equivalent discipline, or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience in electrical systems, electronics, and/or instrumentation controls, as approved by Management.
 
Must be able to pass an examination and perform demonstrations. 
 
Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the Company, all required training to advance to the ICE Technician classification, or vacate the ICE Technician-J classification.
 
Must have aptitude to learn and perform duties set forth.

Must have the basic degree of knowledge and skill necessary to perform work in the installation, inspection, repair, adjustment, calibration and servicing of instruments and controls.
 
Must have sufficient experience in the use of power plant instrumentation and/or environmental controls to have a thorough working knowledge of process control and regulated components.
 
Must have the knowledge and skills needed to calibrate and adjust instruments and controls and be capable of readily detecting and making repairs to complex systems.

Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints and specifications.
 
Must have a working knowledge of equipment and clearance procedures, and the rules, safety practices, and procedures applicable to the work.
 
Must be able to assist in the leadership and direction of other employees assigned to assist in the work and obtain cooperation and satisfactory work results.
 
Must have basic working knowledge of testing equipment in the department, tools and equipment and their skilled use as required in the work.
 
Must be able to pass driving tests as prescribed by the Company, and hold a valid State Driver’s license.
