Description

The Assistant Branch Manager works as second in charge of daily branch management operations, including supervision and delegation. Completes duties as delegated by the Branch Manager. This position provides excellent customer service, and communicates effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, ability, or background 


This is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $50,382, with excellent benefits. Position is open until filled.  


Schedule

Saturday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

Sunday: 12:30 pm - 5 pm
Monday: 8:30 am - 5 pm
Tuesday: 10:30 am - 8 pm
Wednesday: 10:30 am - 8 pm

Trails West: 11401 East 23rd Street, Independence, MO, 64052. 

Sugar Creek: 102 South Sterling Avenue, Sugar Creek, MO, 64054.  


Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Acts as the floor and daily operations leader in the Library.
  2. In coordination with the Branch Manager, ensures adequate staffing. This includes scheduling staff and substitutes. This may include adjusting or reasonably augmenting own schedule if other staff cannot be found to provide coverage.
  3. Maintain a safe and inclusive environment, completing incident reports and communicating trends with library leadership. Upholds patron behavior guidelines in collaboration with Safety staff.
  4. Facilitates circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials. Explains and interprets circulation policies and procedures.
  5. Directly supervises assigned staff and functions.
  6. Provides research, readers’ advisory, technical, and referral services using all relevant Library resources.
  7. Participates in hiring, training, and evaluating direct and indirect reports in collaboration with the Branch Manager to ensure staff can give the highest quality service.
  8. Ensures completion of office tasks, including completing and submitting reports, deposits, ordering supplies, submitting tickets, etc.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Branch Specific Duties

  • Sugar Creek and Trails West receive United States Passport applications, employees at those branches assist in processing applications and train new staff on the process. Staff must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.
  • Sugar Creek is a designated United States Village Post Office. Employees at these branches additionally sell stamps.

Requirements

  1. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and the public.
  2. Demonstrated ability to organize work effectively and supervise staff.
  3. Superior oral and written communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to learn operation of electronic circulation system and catalog.
  5. Demonstrated advanced computer skills; competency in technology skills used in libraries.
  6. Knowledge of library practices and values, including confidentiality of customer information, freedom of information, and intellectual freedom.
  7. Ability to work during all hours of branch operations should the need arise.
  8. Staff at Sugar Creek and Trails West must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.
  9. Staff performing Notary Services must meet the requirements listed in MO Notary Handbook.
  10. Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages utilized in Jackson County, MO, including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of education and experience with emphasis on public services.
  • Extensive customer service experience in a patron or customer facing environment.
  • Experience as a supervisor.

Work Environment

Work is performed at the Trails West & Sugar Creek Branches. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
