About the Department


This vacancy is located in the Capitol Detail Unit of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections/Office of State Police located in East Baton Rouge Parish.

This incumbent of this position serves as the second-line supervisor and manages the operations of a shift of DPS Police Officers. He/she prepares duty assignments assigns officers to respond to calls, directs, inspects and reviews the law enforcement activities of his/her subordinate officers.

Position Duties

Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been in a position equivalent or higher in scope of responsibility to a DPS Police Sergeant in State service:

Five years of experience as a DPS Police Officer; OR

Six years of law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Other Qualifications

Job Duties:
Serves as a second-line supervisor over a shift of DPS Police Officers; prepares duty assignments, assigns officers to respond to requests for assistance, directs, inspects, and reviews the law enforcement activities of subordinate officers. 

Supervises major accident/incident scenes and arrests. 

Conducts proactive patrol duties, issues citations, investigates crashes, and responds to all calls for service. 

Prepares various daily, weekly, and annual reports and statistics. 

Manages all of the operations at a shift level. 

Organizes proactive enforcement activity on their assigned shift. 

Acts as the liaison between supervisors and managers. 

Reviews and approves use of force reports, pursuit reports, and video footage of officers performing their duties. 

Reviews and approves arrest and incident reports for accuracy and completeness. 

Ensures subordinates follow law, policy, and orders from higher-ranking police officers. 

Serves as the officer in charge during large-scale events such as protests, foot races, Mardi Gras, dignitary protection details, etc.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Appointment Type: This position will be filled by the promotion of a classified, permanent employee of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, Office of State Police.
