About the Department

GENERAL TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Advanced Studies Program Coordinator requires dual responsibility of teaching and coordination of Advanced Studies programs.  In addition to fulfilling the obligations of a teaching position (refer to “Essential Teaching Duties” in Teacher Job description), the Program Coordinator for Advanced Studies provides instructional leadership to the department and collaborates with school and division leadership to maximize teacher capacity and improve student outcomes.   As with all teachers, they will help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to students developing as mature, able, and responsible members of society.  Responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by Hanover County Public Schools and Virginia Standards of Learning.

In addition to serving as the leader of the Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment programs, the Coordinator will teach three classes.    

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ADVANCED STUDIES PROGRAM COORDINATOR:

The Advanced Studies Program Coordinator serves as the instructional leader for Advanced Placement, Advance College Academy, Dual Enrollment, and advanced coursework in the secondary school and is responsible for the total operations of those programs.    The Advanced Studies Program Coordinator shall provide leadership, administrative, and supervisory skills for the educational development of students and staff, as well as to promote appropriate parent and community awareness.  Specific responsibilities and expectations include, but are not limited to, the following:
  
  • Provides leadership in promoting pathway, program, and other choices for students in pursuing advanced studies, with a focus on increasing participation in underserved populations, strengthening the cohort experience for students and their parents, and ensuring equity in courses and programs.
  • Collaborates with division leadership to recommend the addition of advanced studies courses (DE & AP) to the Program of Studies, as well as determine which courses may need removal or revamping. 
  • Analyzes performance data and instructional strategies to make appropriate educational decisions to improve classroom instruction, increase student achievement, and improve overall school, department, and team effectiveness.  Annual goal setting through the CSIP process should include specific metrics and strategies for improvement.
  • Communication and technological skills to maintain and to analyze a current and comprehensive database of the status of all eligible and potential Advanced Placement, Advance College Academy, and Dual Enrollment students to monitor growth, provide pertinent information, and assess progress toward increasing enrollment.
  • Assists in the development of remediation and enrichment programs, including summer planning.
  • Assists in the supervision of instruction by observing, evaluating, and providing feedback to advanced studies teachers.
  • Conducts learning walks and observations to provide teachers with quality feedback to improve practice.
  • Provides professional learning, vertical alignment, and ongoing collaboration among teachers, administrators, specialists, and support staff.
  • Models effective teaching techniques in the classroom; uses peer coaching to maximizing instructional effectiveness.
  • Provides teachers with resources for the successful implementation of effective instructional strategies.
  • Collaborates with the College Board, dual enrollment partners, Virtual Virginia, and other external organizations to ensure implementation of the programs in accordance with the school division’s policies and practices.
  • Coordinates work through collaboration with division leaders, as part of the school leadership team, the school counseling team, and other high school Advanced Studies Program Coordinators.
  • Utilizes collaboration and shared decision-making with the school to build relationships, maintain positive morale, and facilitate effective lines of communication.
  • Communicates advanced studies educational opportunities and conducts orientations, open houses, and other informational sessions.
  • Collaborates on behalf of the department with administration on the comprehensive scheduling process.
  • Provides guidance and coordination of all advanced studies required examinations in collaboration with the school testing coordinator.  
  • Assists the principal in screening, interviewing, and recommending personnel in advanced studies.
  • Plans, prepares, and implements a fiscally-responsible department budget to support the school's mission and goals and follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies with regard to finances, accountability, and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school division’s policies and practices.

Position Duties

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of: current practices, techniques, and methods of teaching; the principles of educational testing and principles and methods of remedial education; effective means of supervision and instruction as applied to the work of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities; the principles and methods of educational research. Ability to: apply modern methods and principles of education to pupils functioning at the elementary and/or secondary school level; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children, adolescents, or adults of normal and/or impaired learning ability; maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.  Teacher License with endorsement(s) in the content area(s) required by this position or be eligible to ascertain a license and endorsement.  At least three years of successful experience as an advanced studies classroom teacher at the secondary level.

Preferred:  Master’s Degree from accredited institution. Endorsement in Administration and Supervision. At least five years of relevant Advanced Placement, Advance College Academy, or Dual Enrollment leadership and teaching experience.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.   Physical capability to use and operate effectively various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.   Work is typically performed in a school setting including; classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.  Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required.  Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone, email, and in person as necessary.
