About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator II within the Public Works Department, Streets Division on one of our Asphalt Maintenance Crews. This position is an entry level Equipment Operator position that will primarily be operating, maintaining and placing asphalt in an Asphalt Patch Truck. The ideal candidate will have experience operating a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of City grounds, facilities, and infrastructure. This equipment includes skid steers, trackhoe/excavators, loaders, dump trucks,patch trucks, trench rollers, asphalt roller, tamps, motor graders, road wideners or similar machinery. They will perform skilled work in the
operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment. 

What you'll be doing:

  • Operation and maintenance of an asphalt patch truck.
  • Place and manipulate asphalt in accordance with the City of Asheville Standard and Specifications.
  • Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of City grounds, facilities and infrastructure, including, but not limited to, heavy trucks, front end loaders, compactors, bulldozers, tampers, rollers, etc.
  • Transports equipment from location to location.
  • Performs street and sidewalk maintenance.
  • Participates in graffiti removal, sidewalk snow removal, barricade placement for events.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.
  • Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs.
  • Trains less-experienced Equipment Operators in operation of various types of equipment as workload and time permit.
  • Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor in conjunction with maintenance and construction projects.
  • Performs related work as required.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be
considered:
  • High School diploma or equivalency preferred.
  • Some relevant experience with operating equipment such as a tractor, skid steer, trackhoe/excavator, loader, dump truck, trench roller, tamp or similar.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class B) or the ability to obtain a CDL within six months after hire unless otherwise specified.

Other things to know:
  • Hiring Rate: $22.46 per hour
  • Work Schedule:
40 hours per week, four (4) days per week, Mondays - Thursdays, 10 hour days.  This position is eligible for overtime in accordance with City
policy. This position may also work Fridays, weekends, holidays, or during emergency situations or special events as needed.  This position will also be required to be on call when needed for weather events and emergency situations.

  • Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
