The Role:
The City of Glendale Parks and Recreations Department is currently accepting applications for Temporary Recreation Specialist - Athletics Rover. These positions provide first contact customer service to all reservations and permitted events in the city after 4:00 p.m. weekdays and weekends. This position also provides customer service at sports fields and recreational facilities and programs to people of all ages and abilities throughout the entire Parks system. 
This recruitment is for two (2) open positions.

  • Hours:  This part-time position offers up to 30 hours per week and requires working at least one weekend day.  Availability to work any day of the week, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays is required.  
  • Schedules:  This is a temporary position assigned 30 hours or more per week and requires availability to work various shifts any day of the week to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Hourly rate: $18.00
  • FLSA status:  Non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week)
  • Sick Time: Accrues at .034 hours per-hour-paid
  • Medical Benefits:  Our medical plans are administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona

  • The current contribution rate is 12%.
  • Contributions are mandatory, and are collected each pay period. 


Position Duties

Essential Functions:

1. Assist with daily operations of sports complexes, ramadas, skateparks, archery range, splashpads, events, and similar, providing exceptional guest services to tournament promotors, league participants, recreation program participants, the public, and other users. 
2. Monitor, explain, educate, and document appropriate park facility rules and guidelines. Evaluate and determine field safety and playability. 
3. Open/unlock and secure/lock facilities, including gates and restrooms. 
4. Document and report lighting outages, graffiti, and other damage they observe or have reported to them by the public. 
5. Establish and maintain a high level of customer service and working relationships with public, allocation groups and other staff. Communicate effectively.
6. Resolve situations and incidents between users, call for assistance when needed. Check in on users with reservation agreements.
7. Operate a city vehicle (depending on assignment), complete required vehicle inspection and report, if applicable.
8. Able to and comfortable working independently primarily during evening hours.
9. Prepare and submit professional and detailed incident, accident and other reports, documents, and photos in a timely manner.
10. Maintain a positive City and Department image with citizens.
11. Wear uniform shirt and dress appropriately.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors:

One (1) year of experience in public recreation or related field.

Knowledge of: 

Parks and Recreation department policies and regulations. City ordinances and state statutes for park use. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Ability to: 

Understand and follow safe working practices. Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. Handle encounters with hostile or irate individuals. Conduct equipment or facility checks. Keep accurate records; prepare accurate and daily reports. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public.

Special Requirements:

Valid Arizona driver's license. Must be 18 years of age to drive City vehicles. Basic life support (CPR) and first aid certification. Requires availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.

Exposure to hot and varying weather conditions. Transports and sets up sports equipment onsite. May occasionally encounter hostile or irate individuals.
