The CIS Thrift Store, operated by Communities In Schools of South Central Texas, is a mission-driven retail space that supports local students and families through the sale of donated goods. Proceeds directly fund CIS of South Central Texas programs that help at-risk youth stay in school and succeed in life.


We are seeking a Thrift Store Manager who is passionate about community impact and skilled in retail and thrift store operations. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the store, managing staff and volunteers, ensuring excellent customer service, and driving sales to support CIS initiatives. Position Summary 


The Thrift Store Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management and planning of the CIS Thrift Store, including staff and volunteer supervision, customer care, financial oversight and cash handling procedures, attaining sales goals and revenues, setting standards and procedures for loss prevention, team building, donation processing, and visual merchandising.  The Store Manager will ensure the constant availability of quality items for sale within a clean, well-organized shop that appeals to customers. 


This is a full-time job with an expected work week of 40 hours per week or more as business demands require. The Store Manager’s schedule will include working the opening and closing shifts Tuesday through Saturday as required due to scheduling needs and up to three Monday mornings each month.  Additional hours may be required for shift coverage. The store manager is a positive leader for the thrift store employees, providing superior quality customer service, displaying an ongoing good work ethic to keep team members motivated and productive. The Store Manager is responsible for the store in all capacities, promotes the mission of CIS and oversees the store’s social media pages, takes initiative daily to keep the store operating effectively while driving sales to bring revenue money for CIS SCT. 


Essential Duties, Responsibilities, & Competencies 


The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Continuously displays a positive and friendly attitude as well as a strong leadership presence 
  • Guide and support employees and volunteers from an encouraging leadership role 
  • Train new employees and volunteers in all aspects of their jobs and responsibilities at the thrift store 
  • Demonstrate appreciation for all employees and volunteers for their time and work given 
  • Use language appropriate for the thrift store environment 
  • Dress appropriately as the Store Manager to lead others as the example and role model 
  • Maintain a culture of honesty, integrity, teamwork, respect, and compassion to all employees and volunteers 
  • Consult with staff regularly to address issues and concerns as well as to discuss and share ideas 
  • Professionally resolve customer complaints/concerns while in the store 
  • Responsibly handle cash from registers, make deposits within an appropriate timeframe, and go to bank for change orders as needed 
  • Oversee the processing of donations, manage the rotation of items and the disposal of unacceptable items in a timely manner.  Fill in with processing donations as needed. 
  • Create clear and easy sales displays and adjust displays as needed  
  • Maintain a safe and clean store 
  • Assist with loading and unloading furniture as needed 
  • Keep record of sales, deposits, volunteers, and all daily activity in Day-to-Day planner 
  • Plan and prepare work schedules, daily shift assignments and lunch breaks for employees and volunteers  
  • Complete all required office responsibilities including but not limited to the Day-to-Day monitoring, emails, daily operations and other duties as required 
  • Responsible for posting to social media to highlight the daily sales, new items in stock, volunteer shoutouts, staff appreciation pictures and other posts to promote the store and draw customers 
  • Confidently conduct applicant interviews, initiate the hiring process of new employees, and onboard new volunteers 
  • Make and receive phone calls in a professional manner 
  • Develop, implement and maintain written procedures and pricing guidelines for store operations 
  • Attend Thrift Store Committee meetings and Staff meetings as needed 
  • Make closing announcements clearly over the intercom system 
  • Treat all customers, clients of CIS, employees, and volunteers with respect and care 
  • Communicate with Site Coordinators regarding clients/vouchers as needed 
  • Learn about the mission and operations of CISSCTX and have a good understanding about how the thrift store contributes to the continued success of the CIS mission. Educate customers, employees and volunteers about these efforts. 
  • Attend trainings as needed from other departments 

Supervisory Responsibilities 


Manages Assistant Store Manager, Shift Lead, and 5 to 7 Store Associates. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Thrift Store team.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization and applicable employment laws. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and reviews; rewarding and providing disciplinary actions as needed to employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues. 

Requirements


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) 

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and ability to operate a motor vehicle for certain job responsibilities 
  • Previous Thrift/ Consignment/ Resell/ Retail experience of at least 2 or more years 
  • Technology skills with Clover or Square (POS), SharePoint, Microsoft Word and Excel, Canva, Paylocity (HRIS) and social media platforms 
  • Ability to proficiently read and interpret documents 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, volunteers, board members, members of the public etc.  
  • Exceptional people and customer service skills 
  • Creative design and display skills 
  • Social media skills to attract prospective customers, promote CIS and the Thrift Store 
  • Conflict resolution skills for employees, customers and volunteers 
  • Ability to adapt and make quick decisions for daily needs 
  • Ability to comprehend policies of CIS and enforce when needed 
  • Desire to work hard and make a difference 
  • Ability and willingness to learn 

Required education and experience 

  • High School Diploma or higher 
  • Previous experience in a leadership or management role of at least 2 years or more is required 
  • Previous experience working at a thrift store or similar environment processing and evaluating items for resell of at least 2 years or more is required 

Preferred education and experience 

  • Previous experience working at a thrift store or similar environment processing and evaluating items for resell of at least 5 years or more is preferred 

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regularly standing for up to 6 hours 
  • Frequently lift up to 25lbs unassisted 
  • Occasionally lift up to 50lbs easily or with assistance

  • Move furniture with assistance of staff or dolly 
  • Climb stairs, ascend/ descend ladders and stepstools 
  • Switching out rolling containers of recycling to mobile unit outside alone or with assistance 
  • Exposure to both high and low temperatures outside when bringing in donations as well as rain or extreme winds 
  • Noise level is typically high with high levels of distraction 

Travel Requirements 

  • Drive to bank daily to make deposits and get change orders as needed 
  • Attend Staff Meetings at other local locations
