The Montezuma-Cortez School District Board of Education is seeking applications for the position of Superintendent of Schools. Applications will be accepted until September 29th at 12:00pm.

Location: Montezuma-Cortez School District
Reports To: Board of Education
Salary Range: $155,000-$180,00
Start Date: Negotiable
Job Overview:
The Superintendent of Schools serves as the chief executive and operations officer of the Montezuma-Cortez School District. This individual is responsible for the overall supervision of the district’s operations, instructional programs, personnel, financial functions, and community relations. Under the direction of the Board of Education, the Superintendent will ensure that district goals and policies are implemented effectively and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The Superintendent will lead efforts to improve the district’s educational standing, operational efficiency, and maintain fiscal responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Administration:
- Serve as the primary executive officer of the district, overseeing all aspects of district operations including instructional programs, financial management, human resources, and facilities.
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and monitoring of district policies, objectives, and goals in alignment with Board priorities.
- Continuously assess and improve district procedures, programs, and services to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Act as a key communicator between the Board of Education, district staff, students, parents, and the community, ensuring transparency, engagement, and collaboration in all matters affecting the district.
- Foster positive relationships with stakeholders and advocate for the needs and priorities of the district.
- Supervision and Evaluation:
- Supervise, evaluate, and provide leadership to key administrative personnel, including principals, directors of finance, human resources, special ed services, and the chief academic officer.
- Provide coaching and professional development opportunities to senior staff to enhance leadership capacity throughout the district.
- Policy Development:
- Review and propose new or revised policies to the Board of Education to meet the evolving needs of the district.
- Ensure that district policies comply with all applicable state and federal regulations.
- Budget and Financial Oversight:
- Oversee the creation and management of the district’s annual budget, ensuring the allocation of resources aligns with the district’s priorities and financial guidelines set by the Colorado School Finance Act.
- Ensure fiscal accountability and transparency in all financial operations, monitoring spending and financial health of the district.
- Human Resources and Staffing:
- Lead the recruitment, retention, and evaluation of district administrative personnel, ensuring the district employs high-quality leadership and staff.
- Make recommendations for staffing assignments and organizational changes based on district needs and goals.
- Oversee decisions regarding staff discipline, terminations, and hearings as necessary.
- Student Discipline:
- May serve as the district’s hearing officer for student expulsions, ensuring that district policies and legal requirements are followed.
- Community Engagement and Relations:
- Promote positive community relations by representing the district at public functions, school events, and in various community forums.
- Serve as a liaison between the school district and local, state, and federal officials, as well as community organizations.
Required Qualifications:
- Certification: Must hold a Colorado Administrator's License appropriate for a superintendent of schools.
- Failure to maintain the required certification may result in contract termination or renegotiation, as determined by the Board.
- Education and Experience:
- A Master’s degree or higher in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of three years teaching experience.
- A minimum of three years school administrator experience.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and make data-driven decisions.
- Knowledge of educational best practices, school finance, personnel management, and school law.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders including board members, administrators, staff, parents, and community members.
- Commitment to maintain continuity with district programs for teaching and training.
- Commitment to improving student outcomes as the top priority driving all district decisions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years of teaching experience.
- 5 years of experience as a school administrator.
- Central office leadership experience.
- Superintendent experience.
- Ability to deescalate hostile situations.
- Experience with school safety and emergency management.
- To live no more than 30 minutes away from the district offices.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including Native American tribes.
- Commitment to ensuring a close working relationship with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.
- Possess a strong understanding of Colorado school finance.
- Demonstrated success as a school or district turnaround leader.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based, with regular travel to district schools and external meetings.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for school events and meetings.
