Position Summary:
The Dental Assistant will perform a variety of chairside, laboratory, sterilization, office, and patient care duties. This role supports dentists and dental residents in providing general and specialized patient treatment at the College of Dental Medicine (CODM) and during simulation activities. Responsibilities include chairside assisting with procedures and radiographs, ensuring a smooth workflow, maintaining equipment, and fostering a high standard of patient care.
Essential Functions:
- Provide four-handed chairside assistance to dentists and residents.
- Exposes dental radiographs utilizing standard or digital radiology equipment.
- Maintain dental supply inventory
- Assist in the inventory of equipment, instruments, and supplies
- Contribute to the operation of the Sterilization and Dispensary Inventory System
- Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and equipment in accordance with infection control protocols.
- Assist with patient registration and data management in the clinic system as needed.
- Perform basic repairs and maintenance on dental and laboratory equipment, reporting major malfunctions as necessary.
- Distribute and collect both clean and dirty instruments to and from the dental clinics
- Check instruments and equipment in and out to the dentist and dental residents using the university instrument tracking system
- Handle and dispose of sharps or hazardous materials according to established University, State, and federal OSHA standards
- Strictly adhere to HIPAA standards in the protection of patient personal information
- Must be flexible with work hours and stay with the dentist and/or dental residents until the procedure has concluded
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the job
- Reliable and timely, with an expectation of 40+ hours per week on-site
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education
- Graduation from an accredited dental assistant program or a minimum of two years of work experience as a dental assistant
- Understanding of infection control protocol and the sterilization process
- Knowledge of dental supplies, instruments, and equipment
- Experience with different digital radiographic formats
- Meets state requirements for exposing radiographs when applicable to assigned duties
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Individuals must possess the knowledge and the following skills and abilities or be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with faculty, residents, employees, and other vendors or agencies
- Possess the ability to work with frequent interruptions and distractions, and the ability to prioritize work tasks
- Ability to work in different areas as needed
- Knowledge and ability to comply with HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and Laws/Regulations pertaining to the practice of dentistry in Nevada
- Ability to learn and work with various Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs
Work Conditions:
- Work is primarily indoors, but requires being in an outdoor environment when traveling between local campus buildings, off campus, and to other Roseman University facilities out of state.
- Performing duties and attending events outside the normally scheduled work hours occasionally occurs and is required
- Traveling off-campus to a local, state, regional, and/or national event, as well as traveling to other Roseman campuses or facilities, occurs occasionally and is required
- Employees may be exposed to frequent noise caused by dental equipment, telephones, office machines, and nearby oral communications among University personnel and/or residents
- Employee will be exposed to dental equipment and materials normally used in the delivery of patient care in a clinical environment, including x-rays and Nitrous Oxide
- Work hours may vary due to clinic schedules
- Work areas may vary depending upon clinic needs and may include patient treatment areas, clinic dispensaries, sterilization areas, radiology areas, and other areas as needed.
Required Physical Abilities:
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, sit, stand, and move from one area of the building to another on a February 12, 2025 Page 3 of 3 regular basis, and use a computer for a long period of time
- Manual and physical dexterity are needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents
- Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on the computer display screen, handwritten forms, and printed on paper
- Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone
- Ability to lift and carry a stack of forms and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
