JOB SUMMARY
 
Under supervision to perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of City facilities from parks and recreational areas to building, facilities, janitorial assignments, streets and sewers; operate appropriate equipment; and to perform other job-related work as required.

Position Duties

Current vacancies shifts start at 5:30 a.m. The Park Maintenance Division’s start time may vary seasonally between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. Candidates must be available for weekend and special event shifts. Schedules may also vary based on the needs of the department.


Incumbents may be assigned to, streets, parks, parkways, athletic fields or other assignments to perform duties described in one of the following paragraphs. However, incumbents may expect to be occasionally assigned to perform duties in other units when workload and other conditions dictate.

Parks: Performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and upkeep of parks, landscapes, recreational areas, buildings, and other public works facilities; operates grounds and parks maintenance power equipment; maintains plantings, grounds, and structures in city parks, recreation areas, and related facilities; waters, mows, weeds, trims, edges, and fertilizes lawns, shrubs, and trees; installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems; assists with application of insecticides and herbicides as necessary; assists with Citywide graffiti, litter, and weed abatement; operates mowers and light tractors; assists with routine maintenance and repair tasks on equipment; cleans and cares for tools and equipment; completes reports and records; assists with identification and listing of facilities in need of repair.

Trees: Assists in the planting, trimming, spraying, and removal of trees; trims, plants, transplants, irrigates, cultivates and maintains trees; uses hand and power tools, rigging equipment, aerial truck, stump grinder, chainsaws, brush chippers, sprayers and other equipment; may mow, edge and maintain grass; rakes, gathers, loads and hauls leaves and refuse; insures that park and parkway areas have a clean and neat appearance; assists in application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers as directed; polices park and parkway areas for trash; performs routine maintenance to assigned tools and equipment; assists with Citywide graffiti, litter, and weed abatement; performs a variety of seasonal duties.

Golf Course: Cares for and maintains golf course greens, fairways, and related facilities and areas; seeds, sods, verti cuts, waters, and mows golf course tees, greens, and fairways; repairs greens, rakes and maintains sand traps; changes cups and tee markers; assists in application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers as directed; installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems; trims and removes trees as necessary; assists with construction projects, such as concrete work, building repairs, and tee rebuilding or modification; fertilizes different areas; digs irrigation ditches; removes weeds and brush; picks up litter; inspects golf course for problems and reports them to management; performs heavy physical labor; operates small loader, fairway cutting, and other related equipment and vehicles; performs preventive maintenance and cleaning of fairway cutting and other equipment; assists with Citywide graffiti, litter, and weed abatement.

Athletic Field Maintenance: Cares for and maintains athletic fields including renovation, aerifying, dragging, seeding, sodding, irrigation work, and other related maintenance work relating to athletic fields.  Assists with the application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers as directed; assists with Citywide graffiti, litter, and weed abatement.  Performs preventative maintenance activities as directed.

Streets: Perform preventative maintenance on streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signs and delineation. Performs emergency work during storms, including clearing debris from roads and drainage structures and placing sandbags. Drives automotive equipment to work sites, which may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Operates such equipment as skip loaders, forklifts, mowers and weed eaters. Operate pressure washer for graffiti removal and perform graffiti removal services. Perform and assist in the installation of proper lane closures and traffic control. Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Work Background:  Prior experience performing grounds and landscaping maintenance tasks and/or heavy manual labor and the operation of power driven and motorized equipment used in general maintenance and repair is desirable.

Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver's license.


Other Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • General tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair and landscape work.
  • Operation and maintenance of power driven hand tools and light vehicles including mowers, edgers, and other landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:
  • Learn and perform general public works maintenance assignments.
  • Perform a variety of heavy, physical labor involving strength, dexterity and coordination.
  • Safely and efficiently operate basic and power driven tools and motorized equipment.
  • Perform assigned tasks independently and accurately. 
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain basic records of work performed and materials used.
  • Read, write and follow instructions at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Maintain good public relations with people contacted during work assignment.
