About the Department
West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) seeks dedicated and knowledgeable Nursing Success Coaches/Tutors to assist and support nursing students across all three campuses using a holistic, wrap-around support model. These short-term, grant-funded positions are available primarily during the Fall, 2025, Spring semesters and the first term of the summer session, 2026. Weekly hours are negotiable and will not exceed 19 hours per week. Tutoring is primarily conducted on campus, with limited remote opportunities available. These positions do not imply eligibility for regular part-time or full-time employment.
Nursing Success Coaches/Tutors play a key role in promoting student success through individualized academic support, proactive communication, and student-centered coaching. Beginning at orientation and continuing through program completion, they assist students in mastering nursing concepts, developing test-taking strategies, enhancing clinical reasoning, and improving time management and study skills. Coaches/Tutors also help students identify barriers to success and connect them with appropriate resources such as the ACTion Center, Academic Support Center, and Student Services.
Position Duties
The duties of the Nursing Success Coach/Tutor include, but are not limited to:
- Build rapport and trust with students, faculty, and staff to foster goal of on-time completion of the nursing program.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal skills in all interactions with students, nursing faculty, and administration through phone, text, or email.
- Provide one-on-one and group academic support in nursing content and skill development.
- Understand and implement best practices in tutoring and academic coaching.
- Structure tutoring sessions with clear objectives and outcomes.
- Use differentiated strategies tailored to students’ learning styles, prior knowledge, and academic needs.
- Employ active listening, paraphrasing, and questioning techniques to deepen student understanding.
- Demonstrate and teach academic success strategies, including time management, calendar use, and study techniques.
- Monitor and support at risk students’ progress toward academic goals and program milestones.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of tutoring sessions using ARC OneDrive or designated platforms.
- Respond promptly to faculty referrals and academic concerns identified on course or ATI exams, or other tools.
- Support students in recognizing and addressing academic and personal barriers to success.
- Monitor standardized testing as needed.
- Provide skill remediation and support in the nursing skills lab
- Assist in identifying and connecting students to college and community resources.
- Participate in tutoring program assessments, training sessions, and professional development.
- Adhere to college policies and procedures, demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
- Associate Degree in Nursing required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Licensure:
- Current, unencumbered West Virginia RN license or equivalent compact license
- Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent direct patient care experience
- Prior experience in nursing education, academic coaching, or tutoring preferred
- Familiarity with the ATI platform is preferred
