About the Department


Cumberland County Tax Administration is looking for a skilled individual to join their team in the Customer Service Department. This position performs responsible clerical and customer service duties in listing, billing, and/or collections of taxes and maintenance of tax records. The Tax Assistant will guide citizens through their property tax experience to ensure property tax compliance

Position Duties

  • Provides customer service assistance by telephone, email, facsimile, and in person with tax listings, property records cards, property valuations, listing procedures and requirements or refers to others as necessary
  • Completes tax adjustments, refunds or prorates taxes for personal property that has been sold, lost, damaged, etc.
  • Performs calculations for balancing tax adjustments from computer printouts with office records
  • Makes discoveries of unreported property by comparing abstracts from previous years; adds late bills in appropriate tax files in the NCPTS system
  • Conducts on-site appraisals of vehicles for possible valuation changes created from monthly DMV billing
  • Performs a variety of duties to support office functions; issues mobile home tax certifications and moving permits
  • Assists other divisions of Tax Administration, as workload requires

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and one (1) year experience and/or training involving administrative work with public contact and use of computer-driven word processing programs.

Necessary additional requirements: Employees are required to complete the North Carolina Property Tax Listing and Assessing Course or the North Carolina Fundamentals of Property Tax Collection Course within 24 months of hiring date.  

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act and County tax policies concerning listing, assessment, collections, and billing
  • Knowledge of procedures, laws, maps, forms, and records used in real estate transfers and their relationships to other tax needs and functions
  • Knowledge of punctuation, grammar, spelling, and arithmetic
  • Knowledge of routine office practices, procedures, equipment, and standard clerical techniques, including a familiarity of popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs
  • Ability to screen communications, and based on content, reply or route to proper source 
  • Ability to type or operate a computer with accuracy
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments

Conditions of Employment:

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
