Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The role

As the long hole driller reporting to the Production Supervisor. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining the long hole drill safely while adhering to strict safety protocols, and ensuring precise execution of drill plans within the underground mine. Your ability to maintain operational efficiency while working to the mining schedule and ability to maintain and troubleshoot the drill rig is required.

In this role, you will
  • Report to Supervisor prior to shift starting time by actively participating in the pre-start meeting
  • Follow instructions given by the Supervisor
  • Conduct and document a pre-start inspection prior to commencement. Submit pre-start inspection checklist to Shift boss at the end of each shift.
  • Operate and maintain equipment according to all Newmont Plant procedures, Operation & Maintenance procedures and fault reporting systems.
  • Respond to machine warning lamps and signals immediately.
  • Visually inspect materials, machinery and work area for defects and damage. Ensure all defects are reported to the supervisor and maintenance immediately.
  • Inspect all ground support prior to commencement
  • Check for unsecure ground
  • Perform scaling as required
  • Ensure that there is no one forward of the front Jacks whilst drilling is in progress.
  • Ensure correct signage (Warning / Hazard) is used at all times.
  • Ensure all holes are drilled to the correct size, length and direction and drill-bits aren’t over - bored, according to the drill plans.
  • Complete Operators shift report accurately and submit to Supervisor. Including ring and hole numbers, design and drill depth

  • Following established procedures to work safely
  • Helping others to work safely through support and good example and not accepting behaviour which could cause harm
  • Identifying and immediately reporting, and controlling where possible, any incident, personal damage (injury), hazard or environmental damage you see at work
  • Maintaining a duty of care to self and others and stop work if you think it is not safe
  • Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping at all times
  • Only performing work you are comfortable and competent to perform and for which you have been tasked
  • Performing and providing feedback on the required safety activities (e.g. SafeChecks, JHA, hazard Identification & inspections) and other behavioural observation programs.
  • Performing workplace inspections as requested and providing feedback
  • Actively seek and apply coaching and feedback to improve performance
  • Share knowledge, skills and information with others
  • Take personal accountability for own behaviour, work performance and professional development.
Skills, knowledge & experience
  • Proven experience in operating long hole drills (Sandvik experience highly regarded)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of underground hard rock mining techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to accurately follow drill plans.
  • Strong dedication to ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Current Australian drivers licence
Working conditions

This position operates on a 14:14 roster with points of hire available from Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth, and Brisbane. The successful candidate will receive a competitive remuneration package, including generous leave entitlements and incentives.
