About the Department

The Facilities Management Division is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Locksmith. Incumbents must be able to report to work in any of the Broward County owned buildings, facilities and maintenance shops located throughout the county. This skilled position installs, repairs, and maintains all types of locks and security systems including electronic access control locking systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)/Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) security policies, the FBI/FDLE Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Access Security Policy requires that all criminal justice agencies (including Broward Sheriff's Office, State Attorney's Office, and Medical Examiner's Office) have documentation of enhanced background screening on file for all personnel who may conduct any type of unescorted work or duties within any location that Criminal Justice Information (CJI) is housed (i.e., any type of computer or computer system/network with direct access to CJI). Therefore, this LOCKSMTH position may require: (1) state of residency and (2) passing and maintaining a Level 2 Background Screening.
General Description
Performs skilled work at the journey level in the installation and repair of locks and making keys.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Requires two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in all phases of the locksmith trade or closely related experience.

* At least two years experience with Schlage restricted keyway
* At least two years experience creating master key systems
* At least two years of experience with MIWA or similar locking systems

Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Repairs and opens defective locks; changes lock combinations; disassembles door locks, padlocks, combination locks, and handcuffs; replaces worn or broken parts; changes tumblers for new combinations; uses lock pick to open locks where no key is available; makes new and duplicate keys using key cutting machine; changes combinations on keyless locks and or safes.
Generates master key systems using appropriate computer software and maintains these records; makes repairs to jail electrical lock system; adjusts timers, line brushes, solenoids, capacitors, resistors, rectifiers and related parts of lock systems.
Fabricates parts for repair of obsoletes locks using drill press, lathe, grinders and special hand tools.
Installs master key floor and building lock systems; works with journey level tradesmen in the installation of locks in wood and metal doors.
Researches materials needed for jobs via multiple resources; co-ordinates with outside contractors and follows up to completion of work to county standards; attends meetings for planning and updating work orders.
Performs related work as assigned.
