HAI Group®[1], the nation’s leading property-casualty insurance carrier exclusively serving the public and affordable housing industry, is seeking a Research Analyst Intern. As an intern at HAI Group, you’ll gain hands-on experience while contributing to the Government Affairs and Research team and supporting its impact across the enterprise. 

Internship Program Mission: 

To engage in the selection of undergraduate and graduate talent (in specific roles, advanced degrees) for an internship with HAI Group designed to support each student’s focus of study by evoking the utilization of acquired knowledge, theory, and skills for practical application at work. 

Internship Overview: 

HAI Group is seeking a motivated and organized undergraduate or graduate student in economics, statistics, sociology, political science, public policy, urban planning, or related field. As the Research Analyst Intern, you will work closely with the Manager of Research and Industry Intelligence to support the Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC) team on projects related to affordable housing research, communications, market analytics, data visualizations, and database development. Responsibilities include data collection and management, research and analysis, report writing, and collaboration on research implementation. Interns will gain hands-on experience with Excel and statistical tools, learn to communicate findings to diverse audiences, and deepen their understanding of housing policy and market dynamics. This role offers the opportunity to contribute meaningful research used across the company and industry. 

This is a full-time, paid internship that is required to be on-site in the HAI Group office, located in Cheshire, CT, Monday–Friday. The internship program will run from June–August. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Engage in research prep through data collection and data management to build data sets for analysis, cleaning current data sets to ensure accuracy, and further prep data for research. 
  • Implement research projects through data analysis, reviewing literature, and internet research. 
  • Communicate research findings to others through written reports, data visualizations, social media campaigns, email communications, and other materials.
  • Participate in learning sessions to boost research tools, communication skills, and industry knowledge.

Academic Background:

Currently enrolled undergraduate student pursuing a degree in economics, statistics, sociology, political science, public policy, urban planning, or other related degree.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Strong understanding of data management and analysis.
  • Knowledge of statistics, preferred. 
  • Knowledge of statistical programs, like STATA, preferred.
  • Knowledge of data visualization programs, like Tableau, a plus.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping programs, like ArcGIS Pro, a plus. 
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Applications skill set using products such as SharePoint, Word, Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.


 Experience:

  • Prior work experience preferred but not required.
  • Prior coursework in statistics and/or research methods. 
  • Prior work or coursework in data management, analysis, and report writing is helpful.
  • An interest in affordable housing policy and the policy process, a plus.
