About the Department
The successful candidate will possess problem-solving skills and have the ability to utilize a computer and complex sewer maintenance equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., plus additional hours as needed for weekend, standby, and emergency call-in rotations.
No residency requirement, but must be able to respond to emergency call-ins within 30-minutes.

Position Duties
- Cleans sanitary and storm sewer pipes, manholes, catch basins/inlets, storm outfalls, and lift stations.
- Performs general maintenance of sewer manholes, pipes and catch basin, including steaming, repair, cleaning, lifting manhole covers, and other related activities.
- Identifies the location of underground sewer infrastructure.
- Televises and inspects sanitary and storm sewer pipes and manholes.
- Uses televising software to record defects and sewer system conditions.
- Performs daily maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including refueling, greasing, washing, and minor repairs. Makes changeovers on equipment as required.
- Performs general maintenance and annually cleaning of the lift span bridges. Installs, maintains, and removes City-owned boat docks, navigational buoys, and the City Deck.
- Tracks work by completing database entries and associated documentation related to sewer cleaning and maintenance activities through ArcGIS and required computer software.
- Performs all aspects of sewer lift station cleaning, maintenance, and repair.
- Assists in identifying the source of illicit spills in sewer systems and performs clean-up duties as required.
- Must be available for weekend, standby and emergency call-in rotations.
- Assists other Public Works Operations Division sections as necessary.
- Trains employees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to five years' related experience in sewer construction, repair, and maintenance preferred.
- Must be able to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement within six months of hire, and a good driving record.
- Must pass and maintain CPR Training and Multi-Media First Aid course as required.
Other Qualifications
- Knowledge of the general principles, practices and safety precautions of sewer cleaning and maintenance. General knowledge of light masonry work.
- Knowledge of ArcGIS and Close Circuit Televising operation and software packages.
- Ability to learn to operate all Sewer Section vehicles and equipment. Ability to drive various types of trucks. Ability to work in manholes and pump stations. Ability to perform confined space entry as needed to complete assigned duties.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders. Ability to utilize a computer and the required software, including ArcGIS and Close Circuit Televising operation and software packages. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work the required hours of the position, including weekend, standby and emergency call-in rotations. Ability to respond to emergency call-ins within 30-minutes. Ability to make decisions and prioritize duties.
Testing tools may be used to assess applicants' skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to perform the following activities:
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, crawling and stooping.
- Ability to reach and climb (stairs and ladders).
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions, including confined spaces.
- Ability to perform confined space entry within sewers and related structures using standard industry safety practices and equipment.
