TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-Time, 10-Month Position
STARTING DATE: As Soon As Possible
SALARY RANGE: $32,250 - $50,229 per school year *Actual Salary Is Dependent Upon Education, Experience and Contract.
DUTIES: 1. Provide receptive and expressive interpreting and /or transliterating in the K-12 educational setting. 2. Assist students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing to develop the necessary skills to participate successfully in the mainstream setting. 3. Participate in in-servicing faculty and students, as necessary. 4. Read and respond to email communication on daily basis. 5. Attend scheduled Deaf/ASL Education staff meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: 1. Civil Service eligibility as Interpreter for the Deaf: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
A. Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in providing American Sign Language interpretation services, OR B. Possession of a National InterpreterCertificate (NIC)*recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, OR C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's or bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language Interpretation or a closely related field, OR D. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.
*Must submit copy of certificate with application.
NOTE: If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Strongly Preferred: 2. Bachelor’s degree from an Interpreter Education Program or in a closely related field. 3. Demonstration of fluency in ASL and English and ability to process and interpret information effectively. 4. Documented score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Assessment and passing the EIPA Written Assessment preferred, or hold RID NIC, CI or CT certification. Or within the first three (3) years of employment, agreement to achieve passing score on the EIPA Written Assessment and scoring a 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Assessment. 5. Excellent skills in the areas of communication, flexibility, and diplomacy. 6. Experience in support services programs with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students preferred. 7. Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation).
