Job Summary:
The Design Engineer I is an entry-level engineering role responsible for supporting the design team in developing engineering solutions for projects. This position focuses on gaining a foundational understanding of engineering practices, assisting with the preparation of design documents, and supporting senior engineers in the design and development process.
Primary Essential Functions:
- Assist in the development of engineering designs, preparing technical drawings, calculations, and models under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Use CAD and other design software to create and modify engineering drawings and plans, ensuring adherence to project specifications and company standards.
- Conduct research on materials, codes, and regulations to support design efforts, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and industry standards.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to gather technical input and integrate various engineering systems into designs.
- Participate in project meetings, taking notes and providing updates on assigned tasks to ensure that design development is on track.
- Assist in preparing project documentation, including design reports, calculations, and specifications, for review by senior engineers.
- Conduct field visits or site inspections to gather data or assist in assessing existing conditions as needed.
- Support quality control efforts by reviewing design deliverables to ensure accuracy and compliance with firm standards.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
Knowledge
- Foundational knowledge of engineering principles, design processes, and construction methods.
- Familiarity with systems and equipment commonly used in their design discipline.
- Awareness of relevant industry standards, building codes, and regulations.
- Knowledge of design software, such as CAD, Revit, or BIM platforms.
- Understanding of materials and sustainability considerations in engineering design.
Skills
- Proficiency in using design and drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit).
- Strong organizational skills for managing project documentation.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations under supervision.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with project teams.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.

Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET-accredited university.
- 0-1 year of experience in engineering design or internship experience.
Preferred
- Experience with design software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks) in an internship or academic setting.
- Engineer In Training (EIT) certification.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.
- Frequent use of standard office equipment, including computers, keyboards, telephones, and printers.
- Occasional light physical activity such as walking, standing, or carrying materials (up to 25 lbs.).
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, via video conferencing, over the phone, and through written communication.
