About the role

Our Technical Services team is seeking a Hydrogeologist to join our Hydrogeology Operations group based at the Roy Hill mine site.

 

Reporting to the Superintendent Hydrogeology Operations, this role will provide site hydrogeological support for the development and operation of water supply, dewatering and water disposal infrastructure at the Roy Hill and McPhee Creek mines. Additionally, you will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating dewatering and injection borefields, analysing aquifer responses to enhance hydrogeological understanding, ensuring optimal flow rate settings for new bores, and developing a comprehensive monitoring network for each pit.

 

Water management and hydrogeology at Hancock Iron Ore is complex and challenging offering a destination for those looking to expand their knowledge and technical experience in the field of hydrogeology. Be exposed to dynamic dewatering challenges, large scale managed aquifer recharge schemes, confined aquifers, and a range of groundwater qualities.

 

Duties

  • Oversee the development, testing and commissioning of new borefields
  • Monitoring the management, remediation, and optimisation of operational borefields
  • Supervise bore flushes and drilling programs aimed at enhancing groundwater understanding.
  • Perform routine groundwater level measurements, review abstraction data for optimisation, and present this data in relation to mine plans and targets
  • Coordinate and lead dewatering progress meetings, develop tactical dewatering action plans for pits requiring additional measures, and support the design and maintenance of data analysis systems, including Power BI
  • Provide technical support and recommendations to Water Operations and Projects teams, focusing on minimising groundwater risks and supporting wet weather management
  • Monitor and ensure the performance of the injection bore network to maximise water discharge, contributing to efficient water management and operational support

 

Skills and experience  

  • Tertiary qualifications in hydrogeology – Masters in hydrogeology beneficial
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Hydrogeologist role in operational water management
  • Skills and experience in supervising drilling and test pumping program contractors
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders
