Position Summary
The Fessenden School seeks a passionate and collaborative Lower School Spanish Long-Term Substitute Teacher to teach students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4. This teacher will be guided to create joyful, engaging, and student-centered language experiences that help boys build foundational vocabulary, oral fluency, and cultural appreciation. The curriculum emphasizes communication, culture, and community, providing boys with exposure to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures through songs, stories, games, and movement.
Ideal candidates are nurturing, energetic educators who understand the developmental needs of young learners, are excited by the opportunity to work in a vibrant, all-boys environment, and can cultivate a classroom of belonging, curiosity, and growth. This position is through October 31st, and flexibility may be required to extend the last day of substitute teaching.
Schedule
- Monday - Friday, 7:30-3:00 pm
- Start of the School year to October 31, 2025 (with required flexibility)
Essential Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teach Spanish classes to Pre-K through Grade 4 using a provided curriculum and supplemental materials that promote active learning, oral language development, and cultural understanding.
- Use songs, storytelling, visual aids, games, and interactive methods appropriate to younger learners.
- Collaborate with homeroom teachers and the World Language Department to ensure continuity and alignment across grade levels.
- Communicate with families about student progress and concerns.
- Incorporate hands-on learning, educational technology, social-emotional learning, and inclusive practices into lessons.
- Actively teach and model the School’s core values of honesty, compassion, and respect.
- Participate in Lower School faculty meetings and other faculty meetings.
- Support supervision duties such as lunch, recess, class transitions, and dismissal.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Maintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention training (provided by Fessenden).
Qualifications and Characteristics
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Elementary Education, or a related field
- Experience teaching Spanish or working with young children in an educational setting
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to connect with elementary-aged boys
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and communication skills to engage and inspire young learners
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet a range of learning needs
- Commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity
- Successful criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Spanish, Education, or related field
- 2+ years of experience teaching Spanish in an elementary or early childhood setting
- Knowledge of early childhood/elementary pedagogy and language acquisition strategies
- Familiarity with the developmental milestones of Pre-K–4th-grade students
