Job Description:

Laboratory Technical Assistant 1

Daily operation and maintenance of cage washing room, to provide clean caging for animals in vivarium. Occasionally provide husbandry care for animals.

75% Daily operation and maintenance of a large cage washing machine and other sanitizing equipment that cleans cages, glassware, and stainless steel items. Dumping bedding, stacking cages on racks, operation of cage washing machine, removing and storing clean items. Sweeping and mopping of cage wash room. Proper disposal of regular waste and Biohazard waste. Operation of washing machine: washing and drying scrubs, towels, etc. Responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixtures to sanitize floors and areas around animal rooms. All areas must remain clean and sanitized at all times. Incumbent will follow safety standards to insure proper sanitation procedures. Keep storage rooms clean and organized. Upkeep of hallway: sweeping, mopping, running of floor scrubber and sanitizing carts.

20% Understand and follow basic animal husbandry requirements, mandated by law, to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Observes animals and reports abnormalities in appearance based on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Maintain weekly records of cage wash temperature, PH Quat, and cage wash maintenance.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Laboratory Technical Assistant 2

This position performs daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of a research animal vivarium. Responsibilities include; provision of daily husbandry care; maintaining biological safety within the facility; monitoring the animal environment; recording daily animal census and environmental data.

45% Understand and follow basic animal husbandry requirements, mandated by law, to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Observe animals and document abnormalities in appearance based on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Maintain all animal charts, records, and identification cards. Handles and restrains animals through the use of proper handling techniques. Complete the cleaning, preparing, and sterilizing surgical instruments. Responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixtures to sanitize floors and areas in and around animal rooms. All areas must remain clean and sanitized at all times. Incumbent will follow safety standards to insure proper sanitation procedures.

30% Daily operation and maintenance of a large cage washing machine and other sanitizing equipment that cleans cages, glassware, and stainless steel items. This requires relocating animals to new, clean cages while disposing of used bedding, and sanitizing the cages. Understands and applies basic sanitation practices, mandated by law, and dilution requirements.

20% Follow check off lists and perdiem sheets to regulate the feeding and watering of animals according to the appropriate time and measurement requirements. Responsible for certain animals being fed according to a specific diet. Documents this information to the animal’s record. Monitors environmental conditions and understands security control measures. Documents temperature and humidity conditions of animal rooms. Follow Security Standards, read a minimum/maximum thermometer and understand the importance of environmental conditions. Assist the Laboratory Technician Supervisor in carrying out standard operating procedures for all colony operations.

5% Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
One year of experience as a phlebotomist, EKG/ECG technician, pulmonary technician, or respiratory care technician, or in the care, preparation or handling of laboratory specimens, animals, or cadavers; OR
An associate’s degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR

Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Laboratory Technical Assistant 3

This position performs the daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of a research animal vivarium. Responsibilities include; provision of daily husbandry care; maintaining biological safety within the facility; monitoring the animal environment; recording daily animal census and environmental data; giving medical treatments to animals and setting up breeding colonies.

45% Understand and follow basic animal husbandry requirements, mandated by law, to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Basic technical skills to give medical treatments to animals that include: reading and understanding medical terms, injections of drugs, and simple dilution rates for drug doses. Set up breeding colony, segregate pregnant animals, and maintain production records. Observes animals and documents abnormalities in appearance based on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Maintains all animal charts, records, and identification cards. Handles and restrains animals through the use of proper handling techniques. Complete the cleaning, preparing, and sterilizing surgical instruments. Responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixtures to sanitize floors and areas in and around animal rooms. All areas must remain clean and sanitized at all times. The incumbent will follow safety standards to ensure proper sanitation procedures. Understand basic contamination issues and how to prevent disease through vectors and fomite transmission.

30% Daily operation and maintenance of a large cage washing machine and other sanitizing equipment that cleans cages, glassware, and stainless steel items. This requires relocating animals to new, clean cages while disposing of used bedding, and sanitizing the cages. Understands and applies basic sanitation practices, mandated by law, and dilution requirements.
