ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary:

The Automotive Mechanic position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department repairs, overhauls, adjusts, and rebuilds vehicles and equipment, including systems such as differentials, transmissions and other components at a skilled journey level.

Work is performed under the supervision of a Fleet Services Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Disassembles and inspects vehicles and parts for wear, defects, and issues. Uses precision measuring tools and diagnostic equipment to test and identify mechanical issues. Disassembles and inspects vehicles, parts, and systems including engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and differentials. Utilizes specialized computer and electronic testing equipment on systems to determine causes of malfunctions. Performs onsite emissions testing and outsources testing as necessary. Responds to emergency service calls in the field, requiring work in hazardous environments, including traffic.

  • Repairs, rebuilds and overhauls worn and defective equipment, parts and systems in various types of vehicles after inspection. Adjusts engine components including carburetors, fuel injection systems, starters and fuel pumps for optimal performance. Performs maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on ignition systems, cooling and heating systems, electrical systems and various other components. Performs all repairs in accordance with safety standards and manufacturer guidelines. Installs new or repaired parts, reassembles, and performs final inspection and testing in accordance with technical manuals, schematics, graphs, and charts.

  • Creates and maintains vehicle records updating and documenting all repairs and maintenance performed on vehicles and equipment in the Asset Management System (AMS). Tracks and documents issues identified, parts used, and type of work performed and ensures vehicle maintenance schedule is updated.

  • Attends City of Tucson safety, department and unit meetings, and other required training related to the safe use of tools and equipment. Optimizes productivity by keeping workspaces clean and organized and inspecting the condition of tool inventory.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks assigned.

Working conditions as follows:

Work schedule may include early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

Often works under the following conditions: exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise and unfavorable odors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience: Two (2) years of relevant work experience.

Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License – Arizona Department of Transportation – Motor Vehicle Division

Preferred Qualifications:
Any Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Automotive Certification
