I. PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF PROGRAM:

Safe Haven is a residential program with a focus on the treatment and reduction of sexually abusive behavior for boys. In addition to the residential services, BGV offers Psychosexual Assessments for male and female youth outside of the program in order to identify risk and make recommendations regarding supervision, and treatment.  


II POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Milieu Coordinator, under the direction of the Program Manager, structures the therapeutic milieu, ensuring a safe, orderly, model complaint, and clean unit where trauma informed daily programming and behavior management can be effectively provided. The Milieu Coordinator focuses on ensuring that emergency safety interventions (TCI) are implemented by the direct care staff. The coordinator is responsible for managing milieu staff at SAFE HAVEN. Monitoring that supervisors complete job tasks, training, and documentation 


III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure that daily programming and behavior management, with emphasis on Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model are effectively and safely implemented. Ensures thorough training, observation, and modeling those best practices for use of TCI and other milieu-based crisis interventions are being utilized in the program.
  2. Conduct once weekly documented supervision to Shift Supervisor. Submit supervisee supervision logs once a month at end of each month to Manager of Residency Services. 
  3. Ensure Shift Supervisors document progress notes and other milieu note according to CSSD/ PNMI standards of code.
  4. Responsible and maintain accurate documentation of vehicle Inspection in collaboration with agency’s Facility manager or designee.
  5. Perform payroll responsibility, such approved time; unapproved time; missed punches, and requested time off for Supervisors and Relief Supervisors, Mentors/Mental Health Worker.
  6. Work with the Program Manager to monitor and provide ongoing training to direct care staff to reduce the use of physical restraints as a component of crisis interventions and in support of Positive Youth Development.
  7. Work with the Program Manager and to the Residency Programs to ensure that the milieu is staffed appropriately to provide safe supervision while maintaining appropriate ratios to meet the client’s needs.
  8. Complete camera/program observations daily to ensure that staff are appropriately engaging, supervising clients, and following program protocol and use observations to provide ongoing feedback to encourage overall improvement that reflective in individual supervision logs.
  9. Ensure that staff who may not have access to email are informed of communication.
  10. Establishes positive rapport and trust with adolescents and co-workers; demonstrates healthy developmental pathway that encompasses our philosophy in helping at-risk adolescents become successful.
  11. Effectively participate as a Team member to advance common team goals; demonstrates effective ownership that supports our philosophy in helping at-risk adolescents become successful.
  12. Use developmental approaches to provide services, opportunities, and support (SOS) that enhance the adolescent’s environment and increase ability to reach outcome goals, by creating a safe environment for adolescent, both physically and emotionally, by encouraging and supporting mentors/ mental health worker help our adolescents build new skills; demonstrate our philosophy in helping at-risk adolescents become successful.
  13. Exhibit core concepts of positive youth development that promote advancing adolescent development through coaching mentors/mental health workers.
  14. Conduct weekly walk-throughs of unit(s) to ensure building maintenance checks in coordination with the maintenance department safety protocols.
  15. Supervise shift and relief supervisor on unit(s) and administer ninety days and annual performance evaluations.
  16. Assist the Program Manager with interviewing candidates for Mental Health Worker positions.
  17. Take charge of critical and emergency situations when the Program Manager is not available, notifying the necessary leadership and ensuring that staff are debriefed following any critical incidents and that staff conduct debriefing after each client crisis.
  18. Inform Administration of staff concerns and issues. Inform staff that their concerns will be discussed, and they will receive follow-up.
  19. Attend weekly staff meetings and clinical rounds in both KRAFT and Safe Haven.

20. Facilitate Shift Lead meeting

21. Participate in the on-call rotation for milieu staffing related issues including call outs to ensure appropriate coverage to meet program needs on the units.

22. Coordinates with HR-Recruiter/Trainer Specialist to schedule TCI trainers for pre-service and re-certification.

23. Complete all Relias training (online and in person) by due date.

24. Functions effectively within the organizational and financial structures of Boys and Girls Village and other external systems in which they interact. Maintain the standards set forth by professional ethical guidelines and code of conduct of Boys and Girls Village.

25. Identifies, prevents, and reports unsafe situations; uses appropriate procedures to assure safety environment; demonstrates helping our at-risk adolescents become successful.

26. Work collaboratively within teams to provide support across all sectors of milieu community from the people around the adolescent; demonstrate healthy developmental pathways in helping at- risk adolescents become successful.

27. Work individually and within teams to improve skills and to achieve performance goals and improve adolescent’s outcome in leaving our program successfully; demonstrates through helping at -risk adolescent be successful.

28. Effective and respectfully works with others who have diverse traditions, beliefs, interpersonal styles, attitudes, and behaviors; demonstrates through our philosophy in helping at-risk adolescents become successful. 

29. Use information technology to support and improve staff organizational effectiveness through use of Motivational Interviewing (MI); demonstrates helping our at-risk adolescents become successful.

30. Other duties assigned to meet program needs.


IV. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in social work or related field with 2 years experience overseeing youth in a congregate care setting; an associate degree with at least 4 years of experience working with youth in a congregate care setting, or a high school diploma with 5 years management experience in a healthcare setting. 
  2. Experience in implementing a group living environment
  3. Must display effective communication skills in working with children, families, and other staff
  4. Must fulfill competency-based training requirements in TCI Model and become a Certified TCI trainer within 6 months of hire.
  5. Must become a CPR-First Aid Trainer within 6 months of hire
  6. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  7. As essential staff, you must be able to work outside normal business hours, if needed (ie. evenings, weekends, and holidays). This role is considered and classified as “essential” to the operations of the Agency

V. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge of cultural diversity and childhood development
  2. Previous experience supervising staff
  3. Certified in CPR/First Aid and DCF Medication Administration
  4. Knowledge of the public sector mental health including, DCF 
  5. Working with clients with severe trauma and substance use disorder histories.

VI. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Shift Supervisors KRAFT and Safe Haven as needed
  2. Relief Shift Supervisors KRAFT and Safe Haven as needed
  3. Mental Health Workers KRAFT and Safe Haven as needed

VII. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Ability to perform TCI consistent with program policy and procedure. 
  2. Ability to climb stairs

VIII. WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

  1. Some travel may be required
  2. Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule to provide supervisory coverage as needed
