Primary Purpose: Responsible for assisting the driver workforce with student management issues/concerns to ensure safe and on time delivery. Maintains the highest level of ethical behavior with Campus Administrators, fellow employees and our community.
Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED. Class B CDL License with P & S endorsements with an acceptable motor vehicle record as determined by the Department of Transportation and the Texas Education Agency. Motor vehicle records with be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with DOT and TEA Standards. Texas School Bus Driver Training Certificate Must be certified or willing to obtain certification by the Texas Association of Pupil Transportation (TAPT) as a Pupil Transportation Official, Supervisor, Specialist or Trainer.
Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to work effectively with campus principals, staff, students, and parents. Knowledge of bus rules, student handbook/student code of conduct. Excellent interpersonal skills and well developed written and verbal communication skills. Basic math skills, detail orientation, mapping and routing skills Computer literate, preferably in word processing, Access, and spreadsheets
Experience: School bus and / or commercial driving experience. Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business, including after hours, or when away from the office on district business. Required to present and maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance and good personal hygiene at all times.
Major Responsibilities and Duties: Acts as the main point of contact for concerns regarding student management issues and/or procedures. Exercises student management through effective communication and discipline per Elgin ISD policy. Reviews student behavior reports to ensure quality of reports by drivers. Conducts conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues. Works with administration on campuses to ensure proper disciplinary action. Reports any difficulties or changes in student needs to the Transportation Director. Maintains a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, students, parents, and school personnel, always promoting teamwork. Drives any route with in Elgin School District as needed. Operates a school bus in a safe manner in accordance with state and federal laws. Reports any maintenance problems to Mechanics in accordance with Elgin ISD procedure and does not operate an unsafe vehicle. Must be able to physically assist passengers in evacuation of the vehicle in case of an emergency. Reports any accident or incident immediately per Elgin ISD policy. Encourages attendance at all assigned training, safety workshops and field in-service training. Attends professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations in the area of transportation. Inventories and inspects buses for necessary equipment. Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records. Transition to alternative format/platform as necessitated by District need/decision. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used: Operate power lifts and ramps, fire extinguisher, evacuation blanket or ramp, first aid kit, body fluids management kit, wheelchair tie downs, seat belts and/or vest restraints, chocks, belt cutter; back support belt and other equipment deemed necessary.

Conditions include operating in inclement weather, heat and humidity (some buses are not air conditioned), enduring a bumpy ride, and exposure to possible injury due to traffic accidents. Continual walking (to, inside, and around bus), sitting, standing, squatting, stretching, bending, kneeling, stooping, twisting, turning, climbing bus steps, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, repetitive hand and arm motions (steering, driving, shifting), lifting (45 lbs. or more), talking (announcing streets, talking on radio), seeing (traffic lights, inspections, passengers, stopped vehicles, traffic conditions), hearing (traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, passengers, radio, mechanical problems). Must be physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency doors to evacuate the bus in an emergency. There is a considerable exposure to dust, traffic fumes, and high noise level from both outside traffic as well as from passengers. Psychological factors can include dealing with mentally challenged children and adults, dealing with life threatening emergencies as well as coping with screaming children.
