Position Title: GIS Intern

Salary: $23/hour
Location: Maricopa Association of Governments, downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
Note: The schedule for this position is flexible but it is anticipated that the intern will work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week in the MAG office.

Your Team
The MAG Transportation Data Management and Application Function is responsible for the collection, acquisition, and maintenance of data that supports initiatives across the spectrum of transportation programs. This includes the evaluation and prioritization of projects and programs, developing inputs for use in the region’s socioeconomic modeling, traffic data used for the validation of the regional travel demand models, and collection of various types of surveys that support calibration of the regional travel demand models.
In addition to maintaining traditional datasets used for regional planning activities, the function is also responsible for acquiring and evaluating new datasets. These can include items such as connected vehicle data, new data collection technologies, or enhancements to passively collected data. The function maintains both spatial and nonspatial data in support of the organization’s initiatives.
Finally, the function is also responsible for the development and publication of several documents including the System Performance Report, Congestion Management Report, and MAG Region in Review report. Establishing and reporting on federal and regional performance targets is also a core responsibility of the Transportation Data Management and Application Function.
The Position
MAG is seeking a qualified, team-oriented student in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Data Science, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field for a paid internship. The position is part of the Data Management and Application Function in the Transportation Division.
Interns at MAG contribute to work that supports real-world planning decisions across the region. Technology Skills
Candidates should have demonstrable experience with ESRI’s GIS suite and geoprocessing tools or its open-source equivalent(s). Mastery of the MS Office Suite is a requirement, and a working knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite is desirable. A candidate’s willingness and desire to advance their technological knowledge is paramount to success in this role as are strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.
