Note: The schedule for this position is flexible but it is anticipated that the intern will work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week in the MAG office.

Your Team The MAG Transportation Data Management and Application Function is responsible for the collection, acquisition, and maintenance of data that supports initiatives across the spectrum of transportation programs. This includes the evaluation and prioritization of projects and programs, developing inputs for use in the region’s socioeconomic modeling, traffic data used for the validation of the regional travel demand models, and collection of various types of surveys that support calibration of the regional travel demand models.
In addition to maintaining traditional datasets used for regional planning activities, the function is also responsible for acquiring and evaluating new datasets. These can include items such as connected vehicle data, new data collection technologies, or enhancements to passively collected data. The function maintains both spatial and nonspatial data in support of the organization’s initiatives.
Finally, the function is also responsible for the development and publication of several documents including the System Performance Report, Congestion Management Report, and MAG Region in Review report. Establishing and reporting on federal and regional performance targets is also a core responsibility of the Transportation Data Management and Application Function.
Interns at MAG contribute to work that supports real-world planning decisions across the region. The primary duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining a wide variety of geospatial information and ensuring the ongoing quality and utility of the data contained therein
Analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing data used in the implementation of performance-based planning and programming
Independently managing updates of critical transportation-related spatial datasets
Ensuring the accuracy and quality of public-facing transportation-related GIS datasets
Creating maps and infographics that are well-designed, accurate, and informative for use in MAG reports and committee presentations
Conducting spatial analyses, including geoprocessing and advanced data transformation
Enhancing and developing automated SQL scripts to improve data acquisition and processing
Analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing current and historical data through tables, graphs, charts, and cartographic outputs
Coordinating with MAG member agencies, stakeholders, and the public to collect and review data and fulfill data/analysis requests
Conducting research and analysis independently and with a team
The Candidate The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Skilled in:
Managing large spatial datasets
Applying cartographic standards and best practices
Analyzing data and creating compelling visuals to emphasize key findings
Creating consumable reports and presentations
Effective written and verbal communication
Performing a wide range of duties while prioritizing tasks of varying nature or complexity
Ability to:
Adapt to a rapidly changing, demanding environment
Analyze and think critically, draw conclusions, and report results accurately
Develop and maintain effective working relationships
Exercise sound judgement to make critical decisions
Manage multiple projects with competing timelines effectively
Organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files accurately
Technology Skills Candidates should have demonstrable experience with ESRI’s GIS suite and geoprocessing tools or its open-source equivalent(s). Mastery of the MS Office Suite is a requirement, and a working knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite is desirable. A candidate’s willingness and desire to advance their technological knowledge is paramount to success in this role as are strong written, verbal, and organizational skills.
Experience and Education
High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
At least two (2) years of relevant college coursework in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Urban/Regional Planning, Data Science or a related field
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
