The Armed Campus Safety Monitor will be responsible for utilizing limited law enforcement powers to help prevent and reduce school-related violence and crime committed on FMS properties with the aim of creating and maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment.
Limited Law Enforcement Duties
Receives, investigates and maintains records of unlawful incidents, threats or disturbances of potential danger to students, employees, facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials.
Enforce misdemeanor or petty misdemeanor crimes that occur on the assigned FMS campus
Assist outside agencies with investigations
Conduct initial investigations into crimes involving juveniles on campus which would be referred to the Farmington Police Department (FPD)
Follow proper procedures for handling, submitting evidence, and proper chain of custody.
Generate reports for criminal investigations
Testify when needed in court or school disciplinary hearings
Liaise with Children Youth and Families Department (CYFD), Juvenile Probation Office (JPO), and Social Services
Respond to and address emergency situations on campus
Student Management
Assist administration in maintaining an effective operation by monitoring the halls and surrounding school premises.
Monitor and report student behavior and student conduct in relation to the Student Code of Conduct.
Report conflict or confrontation between students and disturbances to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Record data for supervisory staff, such as student conflicts or unusual occurrences.
Report tardiness, truancies, and other related incidents to the appropriate school
administrator.
Check for students’ hall passes and tardy slips.
Escort students to the principal, assistant principal, counselor, or nurse.
Campus Safety
Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, security doors left unlocked, and any unusual activity.
Direct authorized visitors to their proper destination; report, monitor, and address unauthorized visitors.
Conduct regular interior and exterior site patrol
Helps coordinate site’s district’s camera, visitor kiosk, and access control systems.
Assist in completing Site Assessments
Assist in Emergency Drill preparation and evaluation
Works with Fire Marshall and Operations on inspections and compliance.
Other Duties
Assist in direction of Campus Safety Monitors
Provide staff training on emergency procedures as well as feedback about emergency response on site
Assist with traffic safety, including student arrival and departure.
Complies with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the FMS Employee Standards of Conduct and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations.
Maintains current knowledge of safety concepts and procedures.
Perform other job-related duties as may be designated by the Safety and Security Supervisor, school principal or designee as long as they relate to school security.
Qualifications
Previous law enforcement certification of at least three years (retired or former certified and commissioned) where such certification is in good standing
No felony convictions or criminal conviction directly related to law enforcement, juveniles, or subjects related to school safety to include negligent or illegal use of a firearm
No misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude that has bearing on the job of school security personnel; formal discipline for the use of excessive force; or misconduct or crimes that include inappropriate touching, sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual abuse, discrimination, behavior intended to induce a child into engaging in illegal, immoral or other prohibited behavior, crimes against children and dependents or sexual exploitation of children
Must pass a background check that indicates the person has not been convicted of a crime or engaged in behavior that violates the School Personnel Act
Mut pass firearms training conducted by the Farmington Police Department
Must complete school security personnel training as required by New Mexico Statute
Must pass a physical examination as determined by the PED and NMPSIA
Must pass a psychological evaluation as determined by the PED and NMPSIA
Must be a high school graduate
Experience in the use of personal computer, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
A current valid New Mexico driver’s license is required.
Other qualifications as the Superintendent may deem appropriate.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, running, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.
Equipment/Technology Handled Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hours work may be required.
Terms of Employment Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district. (246 Day Contract)
