This role involves troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues, performing high-level repairs, and ensuring optimal performance of outboard motors. The technician works in marinas, repair shops, or dealerships, providing exceptional service to customers and mentoring junior technicians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Utilize specialized diagnostic tools, software, and technical manuals to identify and resolve complex issues in outboard engines (gasoline, two-stroke, four-stroke, and fuel-injected systems).

  • Complex Repairs: Perform intricate repairs on outboard motor components, including fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, and lower units, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications.

  • Routine Maintenance: Conduct comprehensive maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, propeller inspections, fuel system servicing, and seasonal winterization/de-winterization.

  • System Upgrades and Installation: Install and configure advanced outboard systems, including electronic fuel injection (EFI), digital throttle and shift (DTS), and integrated electronics (e.g., GPS or fishfinders).

  • Quality Assurance: Conduct sea trials and performance tests to verify repairs and ensure engines meet manufacturer and safety standards.

  • Customer Interaction: Consult with boat owners to explain technical issues, recommend solutions, and provide guidance on outboard motor maintenance and operation.

  • Mentorship: Train and mentor junior technicians or apprentices, sharing expertise in outboard systems and best practices.

  • Documentation: Maintain detailed service records, prepare repair estimates, and manage parts inventories for efficient workflow.

  • Compliance: Ensure all work adheres to marine industry standards (e.g., ABYC), environmental regulations, and manufacturer warranty requirements.

  • Inventory Management: Oversee ordering and stocking of outboard-specific parts and tools, maintaining an efficient repair process.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Certification: Master-level certification from a leading outboard manufacturer (e.g., Yamaha Master Technician, Mercury Marine Master Technician, or Suzuki Outboard Certification) or advanced ABYC certification in outboard systems.

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a marine technical training program or vocational school is highly preferred.

  • Experience: 5–10 years of hands-on experience with outboard engines, with a proven track record of advanced diagnostics and repairs.

  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of outboard engine technologies, including two-stroke, four-stroke, EFI, and DTS systems. Proficiency with manufacturer-specific diagnostic software (e.g., Yamaha Diagnostic System or Mercury G3).

  • Mechanical Proficiency: Expert understanding of outboard propulsion systems, fuel delivery, electrical circuits, and lower unit assemblies.

  • Problem-Solving: Exceptional ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and electronic issues efficiently.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy outboard components (up to 50–100 lbs), work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication for customer interactions, technical reports, and team collaboration.

  • Attention to Detail: Precision in diagnosing issues and performing repairs to ensure reliability and safety.

  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license; a boater’s license or captain’s license may be required for sea trials in some regions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multiple manufacturer certifications (e.g., Yamaha, Mercury).

  • Experience with high-performance outboard engines or large-horsepower models (e.g., 200–400 HP).

  • Knowledge of marine electronics integration (e.g., NMEA 2000 networks).

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations related to marine fuel systems and emissions.

Work Environment

  • Location: Marinas, boatyards, marine dealerships, or independent repair shops.

  • Conditions: Work involves exposure to water, chemicals, and outdoor weather. Tasks may require working in tight engine compartments or on docks.

  • Schedule: Full-time, with overtime during peak boating seasons (spring/summer). Weekend or on-call work may be required.
