About the Department

JOB SUMMARY 
The Manager of Agriculture and Equine Facilities position is a full-time benefitted position that is responsible for the supervision of routine operations and maintenance of the arena facility, livestock shelters and pastures. This position facilitates, supports, and supervises the maintenance and operations of facilities and equipment; feeding/haying and the health of livestock used in Agriculture, Equine, and Rodeo programs; and supervises/assists contractors/veterinarians with their required work on Campus. This position also assists with event set up and organization; maintains animal records; assists the Purchasing Office with development of solicitation criteria required for procurement of livestock, feed, hay, and bedding; and assists Purchasing Office with the disposition of livestock. This position may, as needed, be required to work evenings, weekends, and called in for emergencies.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
This position reports directly to the Program Director for Agriculture and Equine Studies. This position also works collaboratively with agriculture department chairs, instructors, rodeo and agriculture coaches, and the facilities and events coordinator. This position will also be required to collaborate with various campus departments to execute the essential functions of this position. This position may supervise part time and/or student workers.

Position Duties

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS

35% – Facilities and Equipment Maintenance - Ensure optimal operations by overseeing the maintenance, repair, and inventory of facilities and equipment used in agricultural instruction and production. 

  • Supervise cleaning of arena sidewalks, lobby, entrances, floors, seating, bathrooms, pens, and chutes. 
  • Maintain arena soil and prepare for events, practices, and competitions. 
  • Maintain a clean and orderly appearance of the arena, livestock shelter, and barn area.
  • Maintain pastures and fences in collaboration with Grounds Maintenance. 
  • Provide routine building and equipment maintenance. 
  • Report and coordinate responses to injuries, hazards, or equipment issues. 
  • Maintain inventory of equipment in arena, pastures, and stalls. 
  • Recommend facility improvements and assist with their implementation. 
25% – Livestock Oversight and Care - Support instructional and performance excellence by managing the daily care, health monitoring, and recordkeeping of livestock used in college agricultural programs. 
  • Examine and monitor livestock health daily; administer or coordinate veterinary treatment. 
  • Ensure all livestock are under appropriate contracts (Training, Lease, or Boarding Agreements). 
  • Oversee daily feeding schedules, including class-assigned feeding rotations. 
  • Transport animals as needed using College-owned equipment. 
  • Schedule and assist veterinarians with care, treatment, and medication tracking. 
  • Collect and analyze data related to feeding, health, and animal outcomes. 
15% – Contracting and Procurement - Ensure effective resource management by ensuring compliance in collaboration with contracting and procurement to acquire supplies, services, and equipment that support operations and instructional needs. 
  • Ensure farrier and veterinary services are under contract before use. 
  • Assist Purchasing Office with livestock solicitation, procurement, and disposition. 
  • Procure hay, feed, bedding, materials, and services in accordance with college policy. 
  • Maintain accurate records related to contract-based services and procurement activities. 
10% – Budget and Resource Management - Drive operational efficiency by managing budgets and resources to support agriculture activities, instructional programs, and long-term sustainability goals. 
  • Manage Ag/Equine facilities budgets and report status to relevant departments. 
  • Assist in annual program budgeting with the Program Director and Dean. 
  • Collect data and assist with justification for new equipment or resources. 
10% – Staff Supervision and Scheduling - Enhance workforce effectiveness by supervising part-time and student employees and coordinating schedules to ensure adequate coverage, task completion, and alignment with college and instructional priorities. 
  • Assign tasks, schedule shifts, and provide feedback. 
  • Provide direction, coaching, and training to improve staff performance. 
  • Complete evaluations and ensure compliance with college and department policies. 

5% – Administrative Duties and Event Support - Support operational efficiency by managing administrative tasks and coordinating event logistics to facilitate seamless agriculture operations and community engagement activities. 
  • Be on 24-hour call for livestock emergencies; communicate coverage when unavailable. 
  • Prepare and monitor special events held in the arena. 
  • Coordinate facility and equipment scheduling with coaches and faculty. 
  • Participate in college/division meetings and trainings as required. 
  • Maintain positive relationships with public and campus personnel using the facilities. 
Percentages may be adjusted, and other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

Food Production – Knowledge of feeding, haying, bedding, and livestock care practices. 

Education and Training – Useful for coordinating with faculty and supervising student workers on instructional assignments.

Mechanical – Knowledge of maintenance and repair for agricultural equipment and systems. 

Personnel and Human Resources – For supervising student workers and part-time staff.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in Animal Science/Equine Science or a related field of study orin lieu of the educational requirement the college will accept a minimum of three years of experience in a professional/industrial ranch or agricultural operational environment. (I.e. working with equipment, veterinary services, and livestock - equine, sheep, goats, cattle, and swine).
  • Valid driver’s license, commercial driver’s license and a driving record that allows to be insured by the College’s insurance provider.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Animal Science/Equine Science or a related field of study.
  • Two years of experience working within a college rodeo, agriculture or equine facilities program.
